Algeria ranks 66th in GCI 2018.
The major improvement comes from the score in 4G coverage, both FBB and MBB subscription together with smartphone penetration rate for 2018 GCI assessment. As a starter in its early stage, it is necessary for Algeria to improve its ICT investment, which is falling behind from the world average. The limited penetration of broadband and people’s access to the Internet is hindering the further development.
The Algeria's economic base is enriched with young entrepreneurs who engage in the creation of the start-up. However, in the absence of the 3G or the 4G, the digital economy remains inert. The government needs to improve the quality of the supplied internet services and extend services range; also guarantee the rural area community and other disadvantaged groups access to telecommunication and information network services. 4G wireless is about to be launched by a leading telecom provider in Algeria. This could be a major step towards more advanced and faster Internet connection and would help the country to catch up.
