China moved up three places in the GCI 2019 ranking, from 29th to 26th.
China performs well on FTTH and 4G coverage, both compared to its past levels and externally,
compared with the global average. Fixed and mobile broadband subscriptions increased this year, with
the latter now worthy of a full score in the GCI. There had been a noticeable increase in demand for
e-commerce, AI, and IoT over the year. The government also aims to extend its broadband coverage to
98% of villages by 2020.
China has a population of 1.4 billion and approximately 20 million students enrolled in higher
education. Chinese higher education has grown explosively to 20% of the population in 2015, with a
state-defined, high-technology curriculum. This could be an asset for China's R&D capacity, and
will help its workforce evolve from low-value to high-value.
Online purchases and cashless payments have continued to grow rapidly in China, compared to the rest
of the world.
