Chile ranks 33rd in GCI 2019, maintaining its position from GCI 2018.
As one of the most prosperous economies in Latin America, Chile scores well in GCI indicators, with
above average performances in most broadband-related indicators. This year saw improvements in its
scores for both FTTH and 4G coverage. Chile scored the maximum for both smartphone penetration and
mobile broadband this year, despite a decrease in mobile broadband affordability. Download speeds
and user experience with e-Government also both improved this year. By 2020, over 60% of all mobile
connections (a total of nearly 15 million connections) is expected to use 4G LTE technology.
The fast broadband connection that 4G offers will drive growth in data volume and bandwidth. The ICT
industry is very bullish on this trend, which creates room for development in the data center
industry. Chile scored above average for its investment in data and storage systems and for its
outstanding security and quality, which lays a solid foundation for a digital economy and will in
turn boost broadband infrastructure and related services. IoT investment has also increased, which
builds the potential for future exploration of this industry.
