Venezuela ranks 66th in GCI 2019.

Venezuela has improved its performance in Internet usage, 4G investment, and smartphone penetration. Investment in ICT has improved by 2 points over last year.

Volume of data traffic continues to increase, spurred by the popularity of social networks, the prevalence of smartphones and the use of mobile networks for data in preference to fixed-line Internet services. This indicates potential solutions to makeover the current recessive ICT environment. The government should be decisive in attracting more investment to update existing infrastructure and move towards fiber-optic network development.
OPPORTUNITIES
Venezuela’s government has passed a law authorizing the creation of a new state-owned company, which will research and develop components to meet demand for telecoms and information technology. The company will provide the local support and maintenance of new communications equipment.

Bio Pago, a new digital program launched to control fuel smuggling, will offer citizens a state-funded payment alternative for their daily commute; it will also limit the cross-border trading of gas and stabilize the constantly fluctuating international gas prices for those enrolled in the government program. Some of the latest developments in technology that will be adopted in the program will include fingerprint recognition, QR coding, and geolocation.
