Ultrafast Internet will be crucial for the growth of the digital economy and to enable the digital society to flourish in Belgium. The objective of the Digital Agenda for Europe is to ensure that by 2020 all Europeans have access to Internet speeds of at least 30 Mbps, and half of all households at least 100 Mbps. Belgium wants to go further: By 2020, at least half of the connections in Belgium must achieve Internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps. Mobile broadband technologies, such as 4G and LTE Advanced, must be rolled out as soon as possible across the entire Belgian territory. A proactive 5G framework also needs to be created to ensure that Belgium is in the lead when IoT is rolled out. To further boost connectivity and to achieve a Gigabit society by 2020, Belgium will have to further expand broadband take-up as well as building best-in-class mobile infrastructure.

To be ready for the future, Proximus and Huawei are already testing 5G, the next generation mobile technology. 5G will enable faster speeds, higher capacities, and shorter response times, so both businesses and residential customers will benefit from this new technology.
