South Korea retains 13th position in GCI 2019.
South Korea has progressively transformed its economy to become more knowledge-based. It scored full
marks for FTTH and 4G coverage, and also shows outstanding performance in broadband penetration,
both fixed and mobile. Strong investment in ICT and telecommunications infrastructure provide good
support to the growing demand for national and international communications. Ecommerce is growing in
popularity, and users experience reported improvements in eGovernment, fixed broadband
affordability, and IoT analytics this year.
At the end of last year, South Korea started providing the world’s first commercial 5G network
service. 5G is core infrastructure for the fourth industrial revolution characterized by the
Internet of Things, artificial intelligence (AI), and autonomous vehicles. Looking to the next stage
of development in ICT, with increased spending and effort, South Korea will be able to enjoy the
benefits of being an early mover.
