STRENGTHS
The United States remains at 1st in GCI 2019, having maintained its top position since 2015.

As the US continues to be the global leader in ICT, its GCI performance has outperformed the global average in all indicators. AI and IoT potentiality have also improved, supported by a surge in data created by the growth in cloud computing.

Cybersecurity and cloud investment indicators increased in GCI 2019. The need for cybersecurity standards and best practices that address interoperability, usability, and privacy continues to be critical for the nation to enhance the country’s ability to address current and future computer and information security challenges. To keep up with its current pace of innovation, the US has prioritized IT modernization to improve services offered to citizens.

OPPORTUNITIES
With its high capacity for development and the application of intelligent technologies, the US is well situated to maintain its leading position.

The Artificial Intelligence Exploration (AIE) program is a key component of broader AI investment aimed at ensuring the US maintains an advantage in rapidly accelerating technology areas. AI in turn underpins the development of other emerging technologies. Previous investment has advanced “first wave” (rule-based) and “second wave” (statistical-learning-based) AI technologies. “Third wave” AI theory and applications will address the limitations of first- and second-wave technologies, making it possible for machines to contextually adapt to changing situations.
