The IoT market in Italy is going to grow steadily. The sector of new connected technologies is increasingly taking on a decisive role within the Italian economy. To further encourage the development of digital and IoT services in Italy, a series of policies have been launched, including the “National Plan for Industry 4.0”. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a catchall term for many kinds of connected devices found in cities, factories, and homes. They often don’t need as much bandwidth as smartphones, but connecting them through existing LTE networks is expensive. Two new types of networks are now being deployed for IoT: Long Term Evolution for Machines (LTE-M) and Narrowband–Internet of Things (NB-IoT). Both are designed for low-power devices that send only a few bits of data at a time. Italy’s largest telecommunications provider is putting the finishing touches to a new wireless network for the Internet of Things that should be available nationwide in the near future.
