Smartphones that scan for cancer

(Sept. 2024) Today’s smartphones perform many functions, from taking snapshots to getting directions.

Now, phones may save women’s lives by screening for cancer.

Maya Fakhfakh is a Generation Connect Young Leadership Fellow with a medical background.

During her medical training in Tunisia, she observed a high rate of late-stage cancer among female patients.

But many forms of cancer can be arrested if caught early enough. “That’s why I thought about leveraging technology to target these challenges, especially in the African region,” she told Huawei Editor-in-Chief Gavin Allen in a new Transform Talks.

Maya created CerviScanner, an AI-based mobile app that turns a smartphone into a cancer screening device.

In the short term, she wants to make the app more efficient, and to start using it in major healthcare facilities in Tunisia.

“Then, we’d start to scale up beyond Tunisia, going to remote areas across Africa. Scaling up will help us do more testing, leading to prevention, and that will help us save a lot of lives.”
