Huawei committed to support Myanmar ICT sector development in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education
[Yangon, Myanmar, 29th December, 2018] Huawei, a leading global provider of ICT infrastructure and smart devices, and the Rectors’ Committee with the support of the Ministry of Education signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the ICT Talent Development Program to support efforts to meet the growing talent needs of the country’s ICT sector, in line with the objective of building a fully connected digital Myanmar.
A signing ceremony for the MoU was held at Melia Hotel Yangon on 29th December 2018, with Mr. Zhang Liman, CEO of Huawei Myanmar and Dr. Zaw Wai Soe，Chairman of the Rectors’ committee representing their respective organizations, witnessed by H.E. Prof. Dr. Myo Kywe, Chairman of National Education Policy Commission and H.E. Ms. Li Xiaoyan, Minister Counselor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
Under the 3-year ICT Talent Development Program MoU, the 6 areas of cooperation broadly includes establishing ICT Diploma Course System, sponsoring “Seeds for the Future”, establishing the Huawei Authorized Information and Network Academy (HAINA), awarding the ICT Talent Scholarship to excellent university students, providing support for ICT related scientific research and organizing the Youth Open Day at Huawei Customer Solution Innovation & Integration Center (CSIC).
In 2014, Huawei and the Ministry of Science and Technology of Myanmar (now merged into the Ministry of Education) signed the "ICT Talent Development MOU". Since then, Huawei's "ICT Talent Development Program" has helped Myanmar develop much-needed ICT talent in multiple ways. Over the past four years, Huawei has trained more than 1,500 ICT talents for Myanmar. This new "ICT talent Development MOU" is an elevated version of the previous version.
Mr. Zhang Liman, CEO of Huawei Myanmar said: “information technology is profoundly transforming all sectors. Myanmar is entering the intelligent world presenting all things sensing, all things connected, all things intelligent. All this cannot be separated from a large number of qualified ICT talent support. At present, Myanmar has an ICT talent gap of more than 200,000 people, and we estimate that the demand for various ICT practitioners in Myanmar will reach 1.3 million by 2025. We welcome more organizations and individuals to join us and continue to add value to Myanmar's human resources development and make our due contribution to the sustainable economic and social development of Myanmar.”
H.E. Prof. Dr. Myo Kywe, Chairman of National Education Policy Commission said: “establishing collaborative partnerships both nationally and internationally is one of the main approaches which support the development of regional universities. Higher education is playing a key role in undertaking research and incubating the innovative and creative thinking needed for a globally and economically competitive society.” He later added: “We appreciate and thank Huawei for their efforts and contributions to Myanmar ICT development.”
At the ceremony, Huawei also announced its intention to contribute further and help establish the 2nd Huawei Authorized Information and Network Academy (HAINA) program in Myanmar that would include cloud and storage resources, at the University of Computer Studies, Yangon (UCSY). Huawei will provide the above cloud and storage related curriculum, hardware, software, TTT (Train the Trainer) training, and other supporting needs for the HAINA deployment.
Furthermore, Huawei has also selected a total of 50 excellent students from technological universities and computer universities from across the country this year, in coordination with the Ministry of Education. Each student received 1000$ as part of the scholarship initiative. The Huawei ICT Talent Scholarships for the selected candidates were awarded at the event in Yangon. From 2014 to date, the program has conferred scholarships to 150 students from 62 universities in total. At the ceremony on Saturday, the scholarship recipient students’ representative gave a thank you address to Huawei and the Ministry of Education. The ceremony was followed by an organized visit to the Huawei CISC (Customer Solution Innovation and Integration Center) Exhibition Hall, located at Huawei’s Yangon Head Office at Myanmar Plaza.
