Helping Address Water Shortages and Single-use Plastic Pollution in the UAE

The UAE faces the problems of water shortages and fragile ecosystems. The UAE government announced that 2023 would be the Year of Sustainability, and hosted the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28). It also launched the Dubai Can initiative that encourages responsible partners to reduce the use of single-use plastic water bottles by installing drinking water stations throughout the city. These efforts are helping the UAE cope with environmental challenges and bringing us a step closer to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To facilitate green development, Huawei and the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism installed a Huawei-branded drinking water station in the Dubai Knowledge Park. By the end of 2023, this water station had dispensed enough water to fill more than 170,000 500-ml water bottles that would otherwise have been purchased as single-use plastic bottles, and this figure continues to rise.
