Shenzhen, a sustainable megacity

(Posted June 2022) Smart city refers to urban landscapes equipped with sensing systems that capture and process vast amounts of data in real time. This enables the generation of simple-to-understand status reports. City administrators don’t lose sight of the big picture while having access to all the small details. Traffic flow, sanitation, and public safety are easier to manage even with cities rapidly growing in size.

          In Shenzhen, among other contributions, Huawei technologies facilitate power grid management, logistics at the Mawan container port terminal, and intelligent operations at the 5G-enabled international airport.

China’s fourth largest city, Huawei’s hometown provides a template for sustainable growth. Little more than a sleepy village in the early 80s, Shenzhen has ballooned into a vast metropolis of 13 million inhabitants.

         Rapidly expanding cities often suffer from pollution, chronic traffic jams, and are at times overwhelmed with mundane but essential tasks like refuse collection. In Shenzhen, buses and taxis run on electric, which is of great help in managing air quality. The city’s first class digital infrastructure supports a higher quality of life for all residents. And with the profusion of green spaces throughout the city, it doesn’t feel like a typical megacity.
