Oman accelerates digital transformation with Cloud

(Nov. 2024) Like many countries, Oman has a vision of its digital future. The initiative, called Vision 2040, is aimed at diversifying Oman’s economy away from its dependence on oil while promoting innovation and technology as pillars of future growth.

And as is often true, this national vision rests on a foundation of Cloud.

“The cloud we are building will serve as a backbone for digital transformation in Oman,” says Hussain Lawati, the Chief Business Strategist at Omantel, the country’s leading provider of Internet services. “It will offer scalability, security, and customized solutions to our end customers.”

The benefits of Cloud are manifold. Yet there are challenges as well.

“The key challenge we face in building the national cloud is national data sovereignty,” Lawati tells Huawei Editor-in-Chief Gavin Allen in this new Transform Talks. “We have to build it in such a way that all the data of the government will be localized inside the country, with full back up.”

Omantel chose to partner with Huawei, Lawati says, because of Huawei’s “proven expertise in building national cloud infrastructure.” Also, he notes, Huawei has global experience with all cloud services, including AI, big data, and machine learning.

“We believe that if we combine Omantel’s knowledge of the local market with Huawei’s experience and deep understand of cloud services, we will be able to deliver omni-channel solutions for our clients which will address their needs and tackle the challenges they are facing. This will give a winning edge to clients in our local markets.”
