EU lawmaker warns against turning AI into Frankenstein

(Jan. 2024) Regulation can never keep pace with technology, says Iban Garcia del Blanco, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). But it can, and must be updated to reflect the new realities of technological progress.  

Digital literacy is key, says del Blanco. So is striking a balance between regulation and the free market. That’s especially true where AI is concerned.  

“Sometimes artificial intelligence is seen like the Frankenstein monster,” del Blanco tells Huawei Editor-in-Chief Gavin Allen. Get the regulation right, he says, and “we’ll see not just a big leap in productivity, but also a more balanced society."
