According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), more than half the world's GDP currently depends on nature and the services it provides. WEF estimates that protecting nature and biodiversity can create sustainable business opportunities worth US$10 trillion and create nearly 400 million new jobs every year.
However, climate change and biodiversity loss are among the greatest risks we currently face, risks that if left unchecked could threaten the survival of humanity.
Society is gradually realizing that digital technologies can have a decisive impact on environmental protection. Huawei is committed to working with government, IGOs, NGOs, research institutions, and enterprises around the world to conserve nature by developing innovative technological solutions. By the end of 2022, Tech4Nature projects had been implemented in 46 protected areas worldwide.
On World Environment Day on June 5, 2023, Huawei will team up with International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to hold the third online summit on Protecting Nature through Science and Technology. The event invites government, conservation, and technology experts to explore how technology can make nature conservation smarter and showcase current innovations and achievements in this area.
During the event, Huawei and IUCN will also launch Smart Protected Areas White Paper that can help enable smarter nature conservation.

As the first study of its kind in China, the white paper proposes a blueprint and recommendations for building smart protected areas based on China's best practices and experiences.
