Security Advisory - Information Leak Vulnerability in Some Huawei Servers

  • SA No:huawei-sa-20160817-02-server
  • Initial Release Date: Aug 17, 2016
  • Last Release Date: Dec 28, 2016

Some Huawei servers have an information leak vulnerability. The servers allow users to select security encryption algorithms. If an insecure encryption algorithm is selected, an attacker may decrypt ciphertext data, causing information leaks. (Vulnerability ID: HWPSIRT-2016-07019)

This vulnerability has been assigned Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) ID: CVE-2016-6838.

Huawei has released software updates to fix these vulnerabilities. This advisory is available at the following link:

Successful exploit could allow an attacker to decrypt ciphertext data, causing information leaks.

The vulnerability classification has been performed by using the CVSSv2 scoring system (http://www.first.org/cvss/).

Base Score: 4.3 (AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:N/A:N)

Temporal Score: 3.6 (E:F/RL:O/RC:C)

1. Prerequisite:

The attacker has access to the network of the affected devices.

2. Attacking procedure:

The servers provide an option for users to select SSH encryption algorithms. If a user selects an insecure encryption algorithm, an attacker can decrypt ciphertext data, causing information leaks.

Customers should contact Huawei TAC (Huawei Technical Assistance Center) to request the upgrades. For TAC contact information, please refer to Huawei worldwide website at http://www.huawei.com/en/psirt/report-vulnerabilities.
