IPv6 Enhanced Paves the Way for IP on Everything

Apr 26, 2022

[Shenzhen, China, April 26, 2022] During the Huawei Global Analyst Summit 2022 (HAS 2022), Huawei held the session entitled "IPv6 Enhanced, Ubiquitous Intelligent IP Connections". Forward-looking participants from Huawei, industry players, and partners dived deep into innovative practices in fields such as computing power networks, industrial Internet, IP-based media production and broadcasting networks, and financial networks, and also exchanged ideas on the future of IPv6 Enhanced.

IP networks are foundational for digital development, and connect all things on one end and applications on the other. With the ongoing digital transformation of all industries, IP networks are having to meet unprecedented demands, such as massive IoT support, ultra-high bandwidth, deterministic services, robust security, and strong trustworthiness.

IPv6 Enhanced emerges to address these demands. With technical innovations on many key fronts, IPv6 Enhanced is set to further unleash the value of connections and become the digital foundation for digital development across industries.

keynote speech

Swift Liu, President of the R&D Dept, Huawei's Data Communication Product Line, delivers a keynote speech

Swift Liu shared the vision of the data communication industry: IP on Everything. In line with the vision, IPv6 Enhanced goes beyond IPv6 by adding innovations in six aspects: ubiquitous connectivity, low latency, ultra-high bandwidth, deterministic quality, automation, and security.

Three phases of development are defined for IPv6 Enhanced: phase 1.0 – network programmability, phase 2.0 – experience assurance, and phase 3.0 – application-driven network. At present, phase 2.0 is already well underway, with phase 3.0 approaching fast.

Tang Xiongyan, Vice President of China Unicom Research Institute, shared IPv6 Enhanced use cases in computing power networks. He pointed out that IPv6 Enhanced is integral to China Unicom's CUBE-Net 3.0 technical system and foundational for its "1+N+X" computing network system.

Dr. Mei Jianping, Director of the Data Application Dept, China Media Group, shed light on the use of IP in the media domain. As highlighted in his speech, the IP architecture is the most recognized global trend and the leading global media platforms are evolving towards IP. Only IP networks can meet the evolving bandwidth needs of professional media companies. Led by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, China Central Television (CCTV) teamed up with Huawei and other top vendors to explore and innovate an extensive range of IP technologies, achieving remarkable benefits.

Zhao Yanling, Deputy Director of the Sensor and Network Control Center, Instrumentation Technology and Economy Institute (ITEI), explained how Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Operational Technology (OT) are integrated to further drive instrumentation to become IP-based, network-based, and intelligent. In his words, the resulting benefits include realizing the integration of sensing, control, and computing and accelerating the digital transformation of the process industries.

Wang Yifan, Chief Network Architect of China CITIC Bank, explained why China CITIC Bank chose Huawei's CloudFabric 3.0 Hyper-Converged DCN Solution to promote IPv6 evolution through digital transformation.

IPv6 Enhanced has been deployed on more than 100 networks worldwide, accelerating digital transformation across industries. Looking ahead, IPv6 Enhanced will continue to innovate in areas such as ultra-high bandwidth, ubiquitous connectivity, deterministic experience, integrated sensing and communication, native intelligence, and trusted networks, helping to build ubiquitous intelligent IP connections and usher in a fully connected, intelligent world.
