Huawei FusionServer 2288H V3 Breaks VMmark Record

Jul 07, 2016

[Shenzhen, China, July 7, 2016] Huawei new-generation 2-socket server FusionServer 2288H V3 has scored an overwhelming 34.80@28 tiles in VMmark's virtualization test, setting a new performance benchmark for 2-socket servers. This world record is yet another broken by the 2-socket server, which holds the current world records for SPEC CPU, SPECjbb, SPECPower tests as of this year.

Top Performer in VMmark 2-Socket Server Virtualization Performance Tests

VMmark is a virtual machine benchmark software suite independently developed by VMware. To measure the performance of virtualized servers, the suite builds a large test system with typical software applications such as email, web 2.0, and e-commerce. As the authoritative industry benchmark, VMmark helps most enterprises choose virtualization hardware.

The VMmark test unit is the tile, a group of eight virtual machines (VMs) concurrently executing a collection of diverse workloads. An overall test score consists of two parts: virtualization performance of each tile and virtualization performance of the architecture. The higher the score, the better the virtualization performance and the faster the VM response speed.

FusionServer 2288H V3 is a new-generation 2-socket rack server powered by two Intel® Xeon® E5-2699 v4 processors with up to 44 computing cores and 1.5 TB memory capacity. Compared with its predecessor, FusionServer 2288H V3 supports six additional VMs and delivers 30.14% higher virtualization performance. During VMmark benchmark tests of 2-socket servers with the same number of Intel® Xeon® E5-2699 v4 processors, FusionServer 2288H V3 emerged top performer.

Core Competitiveness: Powerful Computing Performance and Efficient Energy Consumption Management

Powerful computing and efficient energy consumption management are the two edge-cutting features that make FusionServer 2288H V3 the new performance benchmark for 2-socket servers in the industry. These two features are implemented based on Huawei's multiple key server technologies:

Future-proof Architecture

Huawei anticipates development trends when researching new server technologies. Extensive modular connection experience and signal emulation capabilities allow Huawei to deliver better wiring layout and higher signal quality with lower noise and interference. Multi-phase power supply is a more precise power solution for mainboards, and dynamic energy management technologies drastically improve power supply efficiency for small loads. High-efficiency point-of-load (POL) and power supply in a package (PSiP) technologies not only ensure high CPU performance but also improve energy efficiency. Key Intel® processor technologies build best-in-class servers with top-notch quality and performance.

Proprietary Key Modules

As the sole server vendor in the world to integrate in-house R&D, manufacturing, and delivery capabilities, Huawei makes its own NC controllers, RAID chips, network chips, and BMC management chips. Running several hundred VMs at the same time is demanding on FusionServer 2288H V3 I/O capabilities. Application I/O is accelerated with Huawei-developed ES3000 PCIe SSD cards and NVMe SSDs. Meanwhile, Huawei optimizes network chips in line with VMware virtualization technologies. Such chips feature virtual machine device queues (VMDq), TCP segmentation offload (TSO), and large receive offload (LRO) to alleviate the Hypervisor load and increase network I/O performance of virtualization platforms.

Optimal Heat Dissipation

Huawei employs multiple core technologies for server heat dissipation, including system vector airflow management, double-faced cellular boards, and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) dynamic energy control. System heat dissipation emulation allows CPUs to maintain a dynamic optimal working state on both physical machines and virtualization platforms.

Currently, Huawei's server sales are growing into an increasing market presence. Huawei servers are industry-recognized for their superb product performance and customer experience.

Gartner statistics show that Huawei server shipments have ranked fourth globally for multiple consecutive quarters as of 2016. Huawei servers can be found in industries ranging from public sector, telecom, energy, finance, transportation, and healthcare, to education, entertainment, and manufacturing. In May 2016, Huawei was promoted to Challenger in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Servers.

Behind this market excellence and professional recognition are Huawei's pioneering design capabilities, manufacturing quality processes, and global delivery expertise, which are in line with Huawei's pursuit of excellence and continuous innovation.
