One room, one fiber
In today’s hotel industry, hospitality begins not in the lobby but in the network. As hotels integrate AI, IoT, and personalized digital services, high-quality connectivity is no longer a supporting utility. It’s core infrastructure.
Meliá Hotels International, one of the world’s leading hotel groups, has made that shift central to its digital strategy. Since 2017, Meliá and Huawei have worked together to modernize the group’s networks and digital systems, improving the guest experience while making hotel operations more efficient and sustainable.
The result is a new generation of all-optical hotels built on a simple principle: one room, one fiber.
Connectivity at the core
At flagship properties such as the Torre Melina Gran Meliá in Barcelona, Huawei has deployed a high-speed fiber network designed specifically for hotel environments.
Each guest room is connected by a single optical fiber and terminal that carries multiple services—including high-speed internet, IPTV, and voice—over one network. This simplified design reduces cabling and equipment while improving network performance.
Busy hotel lobbies can support hundreds of guests online simultaneously without lag or interruption, thanks to Wi-Fi 7 technology and built-in smart antennas that ensure seamless roaming across indoor and outdoor spaces. Dedicated channels can be configured for VIP guests, guaranteeing premium connectivity where it matters most.
With the large bandwidth enabled by Wi-Fi 7, immersive applications such as VR room previews become possible, allowing guests to explore rooms digitally before checking in. Some hotels have special “gaming lounges,” and in these high-demand areas, the network ensures stable, interference-free connectivity for a consistently premium experience.

“By adopting Huawei’s Smart Hotel Solution at Torre Melina Gran Meliá, we provide a seamless and smart guest experience with greater operational efficiency, backed by high-speed, robust, and dependable connectivity in every corner of the hotel,” says Tomeu Fiol, CTO of Meliá Hotels International.
Smaller footprint, greener operations
Behind the scenes, the transformation is equally significant.
Traditional network equipment rooms are often crowded with large cabinets and extensive cabling that generate noise and heat. Huawei’s all-optical architecture replaces that set-up with compact, low-power equipment requiring no active cooling and taking up far less space.
The streamlined design cuts overall energy consumption by 30 percent, contributing to Meliá’s sustainability goals and supporting greener operations across its portfolio.
The architecture also lowers total cost of ownership, reducing both capital and operating expenditures by 30 percent through simplified infrastructure and lower maintenance requirements.
Intelligent operations at scale
Keeping the network running smoothly is essential in hotels, where outages quickly affect hotel operations and guest satisfaction.
Huawei’s management platform allows IT teams to monitor the network and identify problems early. Automated analysis helps pinpoint the source of faults, allowing staff to resolve issues before they disrupt hotel services.
Outdoor Wi-Fi 7 devices extend high-speed connectivity to terraces, pools, and other outdoor spaces. Built to withstand rain, heat, and lightning, they maintain reliable coverage even in harsh weather.
Together, high-speed Wi-Fi, centralized network management, and an energy-efficient fiber backbone give Meliá a network that can support both today’s services and future digital upgrades.
A benchmark for intelligent hospitality
Across its portfolio of brands, Meliá combines modern design with digital infrastructure. Its collaboration with Huawei shows how high-quality connectivity can support smart check-in, personalized guest services, and more efficient hotel operations.
With one fiber per room and intelligence built into the network core, Meliá’s smart hotel model offers a glimpse of how the next generation of hotels will operate—quietly, efficiently, and at the speed of light.
