A leading maker of industrial fasteners fortifies its digital storage systems against cyberattack
Founded in 1910, BeA Group makes staple and nail technology for use in industry, trade and timber construction. Headquartered in Ahrensburg, Germany, the company employs about 450 people in more than 40 countries.
Like other future-oriented companies, BeA is digitalizing its operations. Unfortunately, this has created an expanded “attack surface” for cybercriminals. An attack in 2023 served as a wake-up call to BeA’s management that the company’s systems had to be made more resilient.
To that end, BeA decided to modernize and restructure its IT infrastructure. The restructuring shone a spotlight on the weaknesses of its current storage solution – nearly 10 years old and nearing the limits of its performance and capacity.
BeA Group needed new IT infrastructure quickly. “Our long-standing IT service provider recommended Huawei,” recalls Tobias Biermann, Head of IT at the BeA Group.
Huawei provided BeA with an OceanStor Dorado almost overnight. Biermann and his team liked the solution, and after some cost-benefit analysis, decided to use Huawei’s storage in the future, eventually settling on OceanStor Dorado and OceanProtect.
While OceanStor Dorado handles general-purpose data storage and management for business applications, OceanProtect is a specialized data protection and backup solution which ensures that if data is lost, corrupted, or compromised, it can be restored quickly.
OceanProtect works seamlessly with OceanStor systems to provide end-to-end data management for a complete data lifecycle solution.
Best of all, that solution was easily embedded in BeA’s new infrastructure. "The installation was completed in just a few hours, and our 17 locations were connected easily," says Stefan Krause, IT Infrastructure Team Leader at the BeA Group. The company now stores about 80 terabytes of data on the system, with enough space for future data growth.
Not only has performance improved, but data backup is also faster. Backup processes that used to take all night are now complete in less than three hours.
“Huawei OceanStor Dorado provided an enormous performance boost – both in the storage and network environment and in the application landscape,” says Krause.
