CSTI enhances data protection with Huawei’s OceanProtect backup storage
Swiss technology company CSTI provides a range of IT services to its diverse customer base, which includes small and mid-sized enterprises in the finance, healthcare, government, and education sectors. CSTI’s client roster was growing, and with it, the volume of data the firm had to manage for its customers. Unfortunately, its existing backup system wasn’t up to the task: it was unable to complete backup tasks within the specified window and no longer under warranty. This meant CSTI not only faced rising maintenance costs, it couldn’t even get adequate support for its infrastructure.
Help came in the form of Huawei’s OceanProtect X8000 backup storage, designed for enterprise environments. The solution's scalable architecture can support up to 8 Petabytes of data, making it a great fit for large organizations that need vast storage space.
It also comes with advanced data protection features, such as redundant array of independent disks (RAID) technology, ensuring data integrity and availability.
RAID combines multiple physical hard drives into a single system to improve performance, reliability, or both. It can create copies of data across multiple drives, so that if one drive fails, the data is still safely stored on another. RAID can also spread data across multiple drives, allowing them to work together to read or write data faster. This is like having multiple people working on a task instead of just one, making the job quicker.
With two data centers in two different locations, CSTI chose Huawei OceanProtect X8000 for backup area storage. The solution provides features including incremental backup of 48 TB capacity SSDs to meet the daily needs of CSTI's customers, as well as versioning and advanced encryption protocols to ensure the integrity and resilience of user data.
After implementation, 10 GB/s writing speed was consistently achieved, dramatically reducing the backup window from eight hours to 3 hours, and nearly tripling performance, which increased from 9 TB/h on the legacy system to 26 TB/h.
Data size was reduced by compressing data blocks, and by removing redundant and duplicate data, allowing CSTI to squeeze 25% more data into the usable space.
OceanProtect X8000 also comes with an intuitive, user-friendly interface — Huawei's integrated storage management software, DeviceManager — that allows CSTI to easily manage and monitor backups, view restoration options, and track backup progress in real-time. Based on high space utilization and high O&M efficiency, OceanProtect X8000 reduced the Total Cost of Ownership by about 35% compared to the legacy system.
CSTI's rapidly growing consulting services and increasing data flows demanded more from its ICT infrastructure. With a highly reliable backup solution now in place, data security and data integrity lie at very heart of everything it does.
