Skills on wheels: A digital literacy journey
Connectivity and skills are the pillars of digital inclusion. To bridge the digital skills gap, Huawei works closely with governments and partners to enhance digital access, deliver training, and advance STEM education in underserved communities.
In Europe, 44% of citizens lack basic digital skills (in developing regions, the gap is even larger). Barely 10% of adults in sub-Saharan Africa have basic digital skills, according to UNESCO. Senior citizens who can't use smartphones, young adults who lack digital office skills: these people are getting left behind.
Huawei initiated the Skills on Wheels program in 2019. It converts used shipping containers and buses into solar-powered mobile classrooms equipped with smart screens, laptops, Wi-Fi, and training resources. These mobile classrooms travel to remote areas and provide free digital skills training to senior citizens, women, unemployed young people, and K-12 students.
Over the past six years, Skills on Wheels projects have benefited more than 130,000 people in 21 countries, including Kenya, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Italy, France, Saudi Arabia, and Peru.
