Non-Newtonian fluids: Unlikely material toughens folding phone screens

(Oct. 2024) This video shows how and why Huawei harnessed the chemistry of non-Newtonian fluids to toughen up the screen of folding smartphones.

Non-Newtonian may sound arcane, but most fluids and semi-liquid substances are non-Newtonian.  Mud, pudding, and paint are all non-Newtonian.  Generally, non-Newtonian fluids harden when suddenly stressed. Any kid who has ever played with corn starch mixed with water has insights into the properties of non-Newtonian fluids.

A folding smartphone screen must be easy to fold but also able to withstand a drop or accidental blow. The challenge for Huawei was to turn non-Newtonian fluids into something that could be used to protect folding phones. Watch this video to find out more.
