Mount Everest basecamp is connected to a light-speed optical network
(Oct. 2023) At a height of 5,200 meters, the Mount Everest Base Camp on the Chinese side of the famous mountain is now connected to the world with a lightspeed-fast optical network. The FTTR-B solution was deployed to the remote site in the second half of 2023, enabling rangers based there to be more effective in managing the flow of tourists, provide emergency services, and collect data about local wildlife.
Lower down the hill at 4,200 meters, the tourist hill village of Tashizom now also enjoys the same level of connectivity. At local hotels, visitors can be checked in and out much quicker on systems that depend on connecting with far away servers. And tourists, no matter if they are in groups of hundreds, can enjoy high-quality Wi-Fi, enabling them to share their unique Everest experience in real time.
FTTR (Fiber-to-the-Room) is a Huawei technology that allows users to enjoy high-quality optical network service ubiquitously, no matter where they’re connecting from inside a building. FTTR-B is the version of the solution optimized to the needs of small and medium-sized companies.
