Huawei Environmental Policy

Huawei believes that technology plays a key role in addressing environmental challenges and protecting nature, and that digitalization and decarbonization are the two drivers of green development. As part of our long-standing pledge of "Tech for a Better Planet", Huawei is proactively working to address climate change and environmental challenges and protect our shared home through technological innovation.

This policy statement describes Huawei's general principles and requirements for environmental management based on Huawei's policies and regulations, such as those pertaining to Huawei's sustainability policy, green operations, green products, green supply chain, green packaging, and product design for recycling.

This policy is applicable to Huawei Investment & Holding Co., Ltd. and all wholly-owned subsidiaries under its direct or indirect control (referred to collectively as "Huawei" or "the Company").

Environmental Management System

  • Based on the requirements of relevant management systems and international standards, such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 14064, ISO 50001, and QC 080000, Huawei has incorporated environmental management requirements into strategic planning and business processes, and continually improves these requirements.
  • Huawei continuously identifies and manages environmental impacts, risks, and opportunities, including those related to climate change, circular economy, pollution, water resources, and biodiversity.
  • Huawei complies with applicable environmental laws and regulations and other obligations worldwide, constantly ensures the environmental compliance of Huawei's operations and products throughout their lifecycles, and drives value chain partners to achieve the same level of compliance. We also swiftly respond to stakeholders' environmental protection requirements to continually enhance customer satisfaction.

Climate Change

  • Huawei supports science-based climate mitigation and adaptation actions, encourages its business domains to actively set their own green and low-carbon goals (including carbon neutrality goals), and works with customers, suppliers, and partners to address climate change challenges. Together, we contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the carbon neutrality goals set out in the Paris Agreement, and the GeSI Digital with Purpose Movement.
  • Huawei supports the transition from fossil fuels to renewables: Regarding energy consumption, we prioritize clean energy over fossil fuels in our own operations and promote clean energy across our supply chain. Regarding energy supply, we are committed to integrating digital and power electronics technologies, developing clean energy and energy digitalization, helping customers produce and use renewable energy more efficiently, and contributing to low-carbon, electrified, digital, and intelligent energy transformation.
  • Huawei has integrated environmental protection requirements into its product planning, design, R&D, manufacturing, delivery, and service processes. Through ongoing technological innovation, we continuously improve the resource and energy efficiency of our products and solutions, provide customers with leading, eco-friendly products and solutions, and enable energy conservation and emissions reduction across other industries.
  • Huawei prioritizes low consumption, low pollution, and high efficiency throughout its own operations and integrates green requirements into its processes for office location selection, design, construction, operations, upgrades, reconstruction, and so on. Through technological innovation and management improvement, we aim to build low-carbon, resource-saving, and eco-friendly campuses and data centers.

Circular Economy

  • Huawei prioritizes the circular economy model on the premise of meeting its performance, quality, and competitiveness requirements. We pursue the following five objectives to continually enhance resource utilization and reduce our negative impact on the environment as well as our dependency on virgin raw materials:

(1) More eco-friendly materials: Huawei prioritizes recyclable materials, renewable materials, and certified eco-friendly materials and process techniques to minimize environmental pressure.

(2) Lower-carbon process techniques: Huawei reduces resource consumption throughout the product lifecycle through measures such as lightweight and miniaturized product design, process technique optimization, and energy-saving equipment.

(3) More durable products: Huawei improves product durability, upgradeability, maintainability, and data-management design to maximize the service life of its products.

(4) Greener packaging: Huawei takes multiple measures, from design to process techniques, including using innovative designs to reduce plastic packaging, and continuously exploring lightweight, recyclable, degradable, and reliable green packaging solutions to minimize the use of single-use plastics.

(5) Less waste: Huawei improves the recycling rate of components and materials through product design for recycling, and minimizes waste and consumables during production, transportation, storage, and product use. We also work with scrapping service providers to recycle and reuse end-of-life (EOL) products to improve material efficiency.

  • Huawei utilizes water resources properly, strengthens water consumption management, optimizes consumption structures and methods, and takes measures that fit local conditions such as wastewater reuse and rainwater recycling to improve water resource utilization and avoid waste.

Pollution

  • Huawei reduces or eliminates the generation and emission of pollution at the source, controls pollutants (including wastewater, exhaust gas, solid waste, and noise pollution) generated during operations, manufacturing, transportation, storage, treatment, and emissions, and prevents chemical leakage.
  • Huawei develops and continually optimizes the control requirements and management processes for hazardous substances in products based on applicable global laws and regulations and customer requirements, and by benchmarking its operations with industry practices. We have incorporated control requirements for hazardous substances into the design specifications and requirement baselines of products and ensure compliance throughout the design process. We have also incorporated these requirements into our management processes such as material sourcing and qualification, incoming material inspection, and product certification, and require that our suppliers comply with them. (For details, see the Huawei Supplier Social Responsibility Code of Conduct.)

Biodiversity

  • Huawei carries out environmental impact assessments and does its best to avoid conducting business in biodiversity-sensitive areas. During the construction and O&M of campuses and cooperation projects, Huawei strictly complies with local environment requirements, takes proper biodiversity protection measures, and monitors the environmental impact.
  • Huawei works with stakeholders such as governments, customers, international organizations, non-government organizations (NGOs), and local communities to actively explore the use of digital technologies to protect ecosystems and biodiversity, and help achieve the "30x30" target set out in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Stakeholder Engagement and Cooperation

  • Huawei has incorporated environmental requirements into its Quality First procurement strategy and processes. We specify requirements for supplier qualification, selection, audits, performance management, and material sourcing, and ensure that relevant compliance and market entry requirements are met. We also offer multiple incentives to encourage suppliers to make ongoing improvements. Together, we aim to build a green and low-carbon supply chain.
  • Huawei collaborates with the upstream and downstream partners in its supply chain to continuously optimize the logistics distribution network and transportation routes, thus enhancing logistics efficiency. While ensuring high levels of performance, quality, and competitiveness, we prioritize low-carbon transportation tools and methods. We also keep improving our recycling system for returned products to promote resource recycling, and build competitive green logistics.
  • Huawei regularly organizes communication, training, best-practice sharing, and industry forums to support customers, suppliers, employees, and partners. We aim to share environmental responsibility, jointly develop capabilities, and achieve shared success.
  • Huawei is also an active contributor to global standards organizations. We work with customers and industry partners and play an active role in the development of green standards by standards organizations both in and outside of China to make continuous contributions. We aim to drive the intelligent, low-carbon, and digital transformation of industries and support the achievement of sustainable development goals.
