Huawei and Partners Showcased by ITU for Pioneering Uses of AI in Industry

[Geneva, Switzerland, July 25, 2025] Huawei and China Huadian Corporation (CHD) have received an award from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for a pioneering artificial intelligence (AI) application that facilitates the integration of renewable energy into power grids by quickly and accurately predicting weather patterns that affect wind and solar power generation. The winners were featured in ITU’s “AI for Good, Innovate for Impact” Interim Report 2025, along with five other Huawei collaborations with partners in the fields of healthcare, manufacturing, and telecommunications.

Winner Certificate for the project developed by China Huadian and Huawei

Huawei and CHD used an AI Large Model to predict weather patterns nearly 10,000 times faster than traditional forecasting methods. Pilot  stations using this solution have improved their ability to predict energy use, thereby reducing their operating costs and making it easier to integrate renewable energy sources into the grid.

Tomas Lamanauskas, ITU Deputy Secretary-General, said: "We congratulate Huawei and its partners for showcasing how AI innovation can accelerate the renewable energy revolution and contribute to a more sustainable world."

The five additional projects are as follows:

AI Enables Intelligent Manufacturing in the Automobile Industry
Huawei and Guangzhou Automobile Group developed a solution that  shortens automotive industry's historically lengthy design cycle. The AI boosts product differentiation while enhancing the efficiency of failure analysis, a complex and labor-intensive process aimed at discovering why component fails and preventing a recurrence. In the production process, computer vision and predictive models improve quality inspection efficiency and equipment reliability; in supply chain management, the intelligent scheduling system optimizes resource allocation.

AI Specialist Diagnosis and Treatment Resources - Ophthalmology Model
The Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou collaborated with Huawei to develop the ChatZOC Ophthalmology Large Model, an innovative solution for ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment. Leveraging multimodal AI, the system achieved a 95% accuracy rate in screening for diabetic retinopathy, one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Huawei's computing platform supports the processing of massive data, substantially reducing patient treatment costs and promoting universal access to healthcare.

AI-Enabled Pathology Model for Diagnosis
Using Huawei's Data Storage DCS AI Full-Stack Solution, Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai has unveiled China's first clinical-grade multi-modal pathology model, called RuiPath. It  covers 90% of the common cancer types in China, with diagnostic accuracy reaching expert levels. The time required to diagnose a single slide has been reduced from minutes to seconds, enhancing efficiency and reducing the risk of medical error. Ruipath helps hospitals address the shortage of available pathologists and accelerates the adoption of AI in the healthcare industry.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Leigong Large Model
Together with Huawei, Yunnan Baiyao Group has developed a knowledge engine for the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) industry based on Huawei's Pangu Large Model.

TCM knowledge involves an extremely wide variety of source material, from modern prescriptions to ancient texts, making the data difficult to use for R&D.  By feeding data into the Large Model, Huawei and Baiyao were able to create a “vector” knowledge base that captures meaning and context, making it easier to interpret the data and put it to practical use.

The AI also enables Baiyao to sort the raw materials used in TCM 30 to 50 times faster and more efficiently than traditional methods. The company is using AI to bring a new level of speed, precision, and data-driven insight to processes that have historically relied on manual labor and subjective human judgment.

AI-Powered Network O&M, Ensuring Uninterrupted Network During Power Rationing
South African telecom operator MTN has optimized its equipment energy consumption and traffic prediction capabilities by deploying Huawei's next-generation IP network technology and intelligent applications. This has made service more reliable while enhancing network resource utilization and operational agility. By improving end-to-end service assurance capabilities, the network's resilience has been strengthened, ensuring stable network performance even during power restrictions, while reducing operational costs by over 20%. This initiative helps to bridge the digital divide in South Africa.
