China Mobile and Huawei Win 2022 GSMA GLOMO's 'Best Mobile Innovation for Climate Action' Award

Mar 02, 2022

[Barcelona, Spain, March 2, 2022] During MWC22 Barcelona, China Mobile and Huawei's Green 5G project was awarded GSMA GLOMO 'Best Mobile Innovation for Climate Action'. This award represents recognition of the two parties’ outstanding contributions to global climate actions through technology innovation and industry cooperation. The Green 5G project was initiated to reduce the carbon emissions of mobile networks and accelerate low-carbon ICT development.

Ding Haiyu, Deputy General Manager of China Mobile Research Institute, said, "We are honored to receive this award. We always believe that developing green mobile networks is crucial. This is why we work with Huawei and other industry parties to initiate the Green 5G project. The project shows our continuous efforts and determination to build a green 5G ecosystem, improve the energy efficiency of mobile networks, and use 5G to enable digitalization and low-carbon growth across industries, so as to contribute to climate actions."

Last year, by working on the Green 5G project, China Mobile and Huawei actively responded to global climate action and China's carbon peak and neutrality goals. A number of effective measures were introduced to reduce the energy consumption of mobile networks and bring 5G and other ICT solutions to various vertical industries to help achieve digital transformation. 5G has played an essential role in reducing the carbon emissions of the entire society.

  • Product innovation: To meet the increasing traffic demand, Huawei and China Mobile have launched several green base station products to improve 5G energy efficiency. For example, MetaAAU uses the extremely large antenna array (ELAA) technology and high-efficiency antennas that support signal direct injection feeding (SDIF) to both ensure optimal network performance and save energy. Multi-band RRUs support ultra-wideband technology, helping operators add frequencies to incumbent sites without increasing power consumption. The new generation APM product use solar energy, making it possible to construct sites without the use of air conditioners or equipment rooms; this will help reduce the carbon emissions of base stations. Introduce intelligence to wireless networks and base stations to create dynamic energy-saving policies in all 5G scenarios and implement flexible and optimal allocation of energy-saving functions, improving energy efficiency network-wide.
  • Industry collaboration: Based on the Green 5G initiative, China Mobile worked with Huawei and other industry partners to set out an action plan and establish a Green 5G Innovation Lab; Put forward the methodology of multi-dimensional energy efficiency and build a new standard for measuring network energy efficiency, with a shared goal of improving ICT energy efficiency.
  • Green society: 5G has been extensively applied in more than 100 industries, including electricity, steel, manufacturing, mining, ports, hospitals, banking, and campuses, to help them go digital and improve efficiency. In this way, 5G has contributed to reducing carbon emissions by up to 800 million tons.

"By using multi-antenna and ultra-wideband technologies, Huawei and China Mobile have jointly implemented various solutions, like MetaAAU, high-energy-efficiency antennas, and PowerStar2.0, to notably reduce carbon emission of mobile networks," said Aaron Jiang, President of Huawei's SingleRAN Product Line. "In the future, we will continue to promote innovative solutions and network energy efficiency standards, and work with industry partners to promote low-carbon ICT and society development.”
