Mar 02, 2022

[Barcelona, Spain, March 2, 2022] During MWC22 Barcelona, China Unicom Beijing and Huawei won the "5G Industry Partnership Award" of GSMA's Global Mobile Award (GLOMO).

This award recognizes the 5G Capital project, which involves the two parties jointly promoting 5G development, building 5G gigabit networks in Beijing, and fully utilizing 5G to create value for industries and society. It honors how the project inspires other cities around the world to achieve more with 5G.

“Comprehensive partnership including several aspects of a smart city – a well-documented application with impressive use cases, results, and scalability,.” said the GSMA jury.

The two sides started the project in early 2020. To date, China Unicom Beijing and Huawei have made four breakthroughs in this untapped area of 5G. First, they released four categories of standards for user-centric 5G network evaluation, which later became the most critical input for network optimization. Second, they achieved multiple industry milestones for scaled commercial deployment, including 10 innovations, which are typified by the first extensive deployments of 200 MHz, Super Uplink, and indoor distributed Massive MIMO in China. Third, as for services, China Unicom Beijing was the first to provide cloud gaming and network slicing services for ToC users and to launch ToB slicing services. Fourth, in terms of operations, China Unicom Beijing has built a CT-IT integrated digital capability base to implement a series of advanced functions, such as end-to-end network operation and service analysis, cloud-network convergence, and visualized service subscription.

"We're honored to receive this award and attribute it to our partners, who have shown us valuable support," commented Yang Lifan, Deputy General Manager of China Unicom Beijing. "We are committed to building 5G networks of the next level in terms of quality, technology, service, and operation by keeping a scientific, open, and innovative mind. We will continue our efforts in building a new 5G industry ecosystem in conjunction with partners by using leading 5G networks. Our vision is to build a gigabit society where our users have better access to a life in the metaverse."

Ritchie Peng, President of Huawei's 5G Product Line, said, "This award is an honor, and we are happy to help our 5G industry partners grow. Huawei will continue innovating the best 5G solutions to help operators meet network requirements. This is important for 5G to drive economic and social development through entry into a wider range of scenarios and industries."
