[Dongguan, China, July 7, 2021] On July 7, 2021, the Guangdong branch of China Unicom (Guangdong Unicom) and Huawei launched the world's first premium OTN point-to-multipoint (P2MP) private line in the Shenzhen-Dongguan Metropolitan Region, delivering a leading all-optical smart building solution. This solution provides low-latency and highly reliable private line services for SMEs, bringing a premium connection experience to various industries and supporting the digital economic development of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.
The world's first premium OTN point-to-multipoint (P2MP) private line launched
The industrial scale and vitality of the Greater Bay Area, an area with strong comprehensive strength as well as high economic vitality and openness, are growing continuously. By the end of 2020, the total number of market entities in Guangdong had reached 13.84 million, which is a record high and 10.5% higher than that at the end of 2019. This has injected strong momentum into high-quality economic development and further vitalized the enterprise private line market.
Guangdong Unicom has in-depth insights into the requirements of top enterprises in terms of private line quality. In 2019, Guangdong Unicom launched premium OTN private line products for finance, security and healthcare customers in the Greater Bay Area. Its private line revenue has increased rapidly and has become a key revenue growth engine for Guangdong Unicom.
As digital transformation accelerates in the industry, more and more enterprises demand premium private lines. In the Greater Bay Area, there are tens of thousands of business buildings, covering over 7 million SMEs including live e-commerce, online education, and cloud network cafe companies. With cloud-based upgrades, private line requirements of these enterprises have shifted from "basic Internet access" to "quality Internet access."
By adhering to an "Innovation walks with Intelligence" strategy and following the principle of "fulfilling customer needs", Unicom Guangdong works with Huawei to deliver premium OTN P2MP private line products for SMEs in business buildings and campuses. In this solution, OTNs are deployed at OLT sites to integrate both high-quality OTNs and PONs with wide coverage, enabling all-optical smart buildings and offering leading differentiated products and services. This solution also has the following advantages:
- Fast service provisioning: OTN P2MP private lines reuse PONs with wide coverage to implement quick provisioning of premium private lines for enterprises in business buildings and campuses, shortening the provisioning time from months to days.
- Premium private lines: OTN technology is applied to PONs, dramatically enhancing private line quality. In this way, no E2E congestion occurs, and zero packet loss and stable low latency are achieved. Moreover, e-commerce-style operations can improve service quality and customer experience.
- New revenue growth engine: Premium OTN P2MP private lines cover more users and improve the ARPU through product upgrades, inspiring new growth in the enterprise market.
Xu Yuandian, General Manager of the Network BG Delivery Center of Guangdong Unicom, said: "After we took the lead in launching premium OTN enterprise networks in the Greater Bay Area in 2019, we have never stopped innovating. Huawei's new all-optical smart building solution based on premium OTN P2MP private lines meets the increasing, differentiated, first-rate connection requirements of diverse industries in the Greater Bay Area and helps enterprises maintain fast, high-quality growth."
Richard Jin, President of Huawei's Optical Business Product Line, remarked: "Huawei has made continuous strategic investments in the optical connection field and will continue to build premium connection solutions for operators. These solutions will help Guangdong Unicom lay a solid all-optical foundation, achieve ubiquitous optical connectivity, create a premium experience era, and make the enterprise market prosper in the Greater Bay Area."
