Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei spoke at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum to outline Huawei's commitment to enriching life through communications and to address the issue of information security. Mr. Ren also discussed Huawei's optimism about Russia's growth and development prospects and the company's plans to deepen its roots in Russia through increased investment.
According to Ren, Huawei adopts a positive attitude towards the data surge, and does not merely look at it in terms of the ills or complexities that it creates. It is estimated that social progress in the next 30 to 50 years will far outpace the progress that mankind has made during the past 5000 years. When facing tsunami-like data floods, Ren recommends an approach that primarily “diverts the excess data flow,” as it unfeasible to establish an absolutely impenetrable security assurance system that can keep data flowing securely within the networks (pipes) at all times, just as it is impossible to always guarantee that water doesn’t overflow from the banks of Volga or the Amazon River.
Information technologies develop far more rapidly than security assurance capabilities. Torrents of data could burst out of the pipes at any time, and it is impossible to guard against all these data flows. Cyber security is an issue that the entire industry faces, and Ren believes that we must join hands to proactively address this issue.
