At this year's event, you will be joined by over 200 industry experts, scholars, scientists, and policymakers to envision the future of information and communications technology (ICT).

The event will include presentations and group discussions on topics like 5G, self-driving vehicles, artificial intelligence, open innovation models and Fintech, as well as live technology demonstrations. Together, we will explore how we can more effectively leverage emergent ICT technology and innovation within the digital ecosystem to stimulate growth and light the way to progress.

New technology gives rise to new industrial revolutions, which are key to unlocking development potential. European Innovation Day is about exploring this potential.   • Ken Hu

    Deputy Chairman and Rotating CEO Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.


    Mr. Ken (Houkun) Hu is Deputy Chairman of Huawei’s Board of Directors. He also serves as Chairman of Huawei USA. With over 20 years of experience in the telecoms industry, Mr. Hu is integral to the strategic direction of the company and instrumental to Huawei's efforts to expand its business in global markets.

    As part of his role as Deputy Chairman, Mr. Hu is head of Huawei’s Human Resources Committee and is responsible for the company’s leadership and organizational development. He is also the head of the company's Global Cyber Security Committee, which oversees the development of Huawei's global cyber security strategies and the establishment of an end-to-end cyber security assurance system.

    Mr. Hu joined the company in 1990, when Huawei was in its infancy. Since then, he has helped Huawei establish a global sales and service network that introduces its innovative products and solutions to the world's leading operators. He also played a key role in the company's management transformation that has facilitated Huawei's globalization. Prior to his current role, Mr. Hu has held several senior positions within the company, including Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer, Chief Sales and Service Officer, President of Global Sales, Regional President of Huawei Latin America, and President of Huawei's Chinese market.

    Mr. Hu is actively involved in activities that promote the development of humanity and social progress through technological innovation. He is a member of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Telecom Industry Steering Committee and a member of APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC). 

    Mr. Hu holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China.

  • Rt Hon. the Lord Willetts

    Executive Chair, Resolution Foundation and Visiting Professor at King’s College London


    The Rt Hon. Lord David Willetts is the Executive Chair of the Resolution Foundation. He served as the Member of Parliament for Havant (1992-2015), as Minister for Universities and Science (2010-2014) and previously worked at HM Treasury and the No. 10 Policy Unit.

    Lord Willetts is a visiting Professor at King’s College London, Governor of the Ditchley Foundation, Chair of the British Science Association and a member of the Council of the Institute for Fiscal Studies. He is an Honorary Fellow of Nuffield College Oxford.

    Lord Willetts has written widely on economic and social policy. His book ‘The Pinch’ was published in 2010. He has just completed a book on universities which will be published by Oxford University Press in November.

  • Sir Timothy O'Shea

    Principal, University of Edinburgh


    Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea FRSE, Principal of the University of Edinburgh.  A computer scientist, he is a graduate of the Universities of Sussex and Leeds. He became Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh in 2002.

    Professor O’Shea is Chair of: the Scottish Institute for Enterprise; the Board of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society and Newbattle Abbey College Trust. He is Convener of the Scottish Government's Further and Higher Education Sector Oversight Board for Information and Communications Technology. He holds honorary degrees from Heriot Watt University, the University of Strathclyde, McGill University and Saint Petersburg University of Humanities and Social Sciences.

    Professor O’Shea was awarded a Knighthood in the Queen’s 2008 New Year’s Honours List in recognition of his services to higher education.

  • Vincent Pang

    President of Huawei’s Western European Region, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.


    Mr Vincent (Bo) Pang is the President of Huawei’s Western European Region. In this role, he is responsible for the overall business development and management in this region, including sales, marketing, and business operations.

    Prior to this new appointment, he served as Huawei’s President of Global Sales and Key Accounts Department, overseeing global sales, orders and payment targets, analysing industrial policy, developing customer and competition strategies, as well as managing and developing global account organisations, coordinating cross-regional operations and building global organisational relationships.

    Mr Pang joined Huawei after graduating from the Harbin Institute of Technology in 1999 and has held several senior positions within the company including Vice-President of the Western European Region, President of the Vodafone Global Account, member of the Carrier Network BG EMT, member of the Strategy & Development Committee.

  • Prof. Ramjee Prasad

    Knight of the Order of Dannebrog, Fellow of the IEEE, IET, IETE, and WWRF


    Dr. Ramjee Prasad is a Professor of Future Technologies for Business Ecosystem Innovation (FT4BI) in the Department of Business Development and Technology, Aarhus University, Denmark. He is the Founder President of the CTIF Global Capsule (CGC). He is also the Founder Chairman of the Global ICT Standardisation Forum for India, established in 2009. GISFI has the purpose of increasing of the collaboration between European, Indian, Japanese, North-American and other worldwide standardization activities in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and related application areas.  

    He has been honored by the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, Italy as a Distinguished Professor of the Department of Clinical Sciences and Translational Medicine on March 15, 2016. He is Honorary Professor of University of Cape Town, South Africa, and University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

    He has received Ridderkorset af Dannebrogordenen (Knight of the Dannebrog) in 2010 from the Danish Queen for the internationalization of top-class telecommunication research and education.

    He has received several international awards such as: IEEE Communications Society Wireless Communications Technical Committee Recognition Award in 2003 for making contribution in the field of “Personal, Wireless and Mobile Systems and Networks”, Telenor's Research Award in 2005 for impressive merits, both academic and organizational within the field of wireless and personal communication,  2014 IEEE AESS Outstanding Organizational Leadership Award for: “Organizational Leadership in developing and globalizing the CTIF (Center for TeleInFrastruktur) Research Network”, and so on. 

    He has been Project Coordinator of several EC projects namely, MAGNET, MAGNET Beyond, eWALL and so on.

    He has published more than 30 books, 1000 plus journal and conference publications, more than 15 patents, over 100 PhD Graduates and larger number of Masters (over 250). Several of his students are today worldwide telecommunication leaders themselves.

  • Dr. Egon Schulz

    5G IA Board Member


    Dr. Schulz has more than 30 years experience in Mobile Communication Services, Research & Innovation, Product and Solution Creation Processes: Terminal & Infrastructure, Spectrum, Standardization, Prototyping, National and International Collaboration and Product oriented Research (PoR).

    In 2009 Dr. Schulz joined the Huawei European Research Centre (ERC) as Director of Wireless Innovation. Dr. Schulz is committed to the Board of 5G Infrastructure Association. He is actively engaged (Board Member) in the strategic actions of the 5G IA.

    His current working area is 5G and is strong engaged in the European 5G PPP Research Projects. He is Huawei’s representative in the Steering Board of European technology Platform (ETP) Networld2020 and Vice-Chair of the steering Board. In the worldwide Association 5GAA he is Huawei’s alternate representative in the 5GAA Board. 

    Dr. Egon Schulz received his diploma degree in theoretical physics from the University of Siegen, Germany, in 1982 and his Doktor degree from the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, in 1988. From 1982 to 1988, he was employed as a research assistant for communication systems. 

    In 1988 he joined the Mobile Network Division at Siemens AG, Munich. He was a member of the ETSI standardization group for the GSM Half Rate Speech Codec. From 1992 to 1993 he was a professor of telecommunication at University of Applied Sciences of Darmstadt, Germany. In 1993 was a director for System Engineering for radio in the local loop and for wireless private branch exchange systems based on DECT and WB-CDMA. From 1998 he was involved in the UMTS standardization.

    Since 2000 he has been serving as director for future radio concepts. Dr. Schulz has published numerous conference papers. In 2002 he received the Best Paper Award of the ICCCAS 2002, Chengdu. 

    He was involved in numerous national BMBF (e.g. Fleetnet – Internet on the Road) and EU research projects for the designing of future mobile communication networks. He was the project leader of the Sino-German Project Joint Research B3G (JRB3G) between German and Chinese Research Institutes funded by Siemens AG. Dr. Schulz participated in the 863 (MOST) funded research projects FuTURE and FuTURE+. 

    In 2005, he was elected as vice chairman of the FuTURE Forum in China. He had a strong engagement in research and prototyping for Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-advanced (LTE-A) and was involved in the first realtime MIMO-OFDM 1 Gbit/s transmission, Multi-Hop field trial with 360 Mbit/s and LTE field trial.

    His interest is 5G and he and his team is strong engaged in the European 5G PPP Research Projects for Phase 1 and Phase 2 for designing, validation and verification of 5G system proposals additional he is a member of the 5G IA Working Group for Developing the European Trial Roadmap in conjunction with the EC 5G Action Plan .

  • Dr. David Knott

    Chief Architect, HSBC


    David is an experienced IT leader, architect and strategist with over 25 years experience of designing, delivering and running IT for companies in the banking, insurance, media, utilities and transportation sectors. 

    David joined HSBC in 2015, and is responsible for the architecture and design of technology across the organisation. 

    His focus is on making our architecture simpler, safer and easier to use, while getting maximum value from new technologies. 

    David holds a PhD in Philosophy, specialising in Ethics, and is closely following the rapidly emerging field of AI Ethics.

  • DR. Michael Frank

    Director Development & Engineering, Leica Camera AG


    Michael is heading the development unit including Optics, Digital Imaging, Electronics, Hardware and Software for BU Photo and BU Professional.

    His unit is also responsible for the technical part of the cooperation with Huawei, which results in the successful photography feature of P and Mate series “co-engineered with Leica”.

    He leads the Max-Berek Innovation Lab GmbH, which was initiated by Dr. Kaufmann, majority owner of Leica Camera AG, and Mr. Ren, founder of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd, for research on disruptive innovations on optical excellence and premium image quality.

    Prior to Leica Camera AG, Michael ran at Rohde & Schwarz as Vice President of Business Unit Radio Communications Equipment and at Siemens Communications in several technical and management positions.

    Michael is always very interested in future innovations, technology cooperation and agile development and holds an PhD in Mathematics.

  • Prof. Rahim Tafazolli

    Director, 5G Innovation Centre & Institute for Communication Systems


    Rahim Tafazolli is Professor of Mobile and Satellite Communication and was the founder of the 5G Innovation Centre in 2012 and became Director of the Institute for Communication Systems in 2010.

    He has over 25 years of experience in digital communications research and teaching. He has authored and co-authored more than 500 research publications and is regularly invited to deliver keynote talks and distinguished lectures to International conferences and workshops.

    He has also edited two books on “Technologies for the Wireless Future”, Vol.1 in 2004 and Vol.2 in 2006 published by Wiley’s. He is co-inventor of more than 30 granted patents, all in the field of digital communications.

    He is regularly invited by many governments to advise on mobile communications and on 5G technologies and is advisor and board member of many international companies, in the USA, UK, Spain, China, South Korea and Australia
