Smartbus: Empowering Young People Online

Training young people how to safely use the Internet is a vital part of today’s curriculum

Understanding Digital Dangers

For all its incredible benefits, the Internet can be a risky place for young people. Cyberbullying and privacy protection are just two of the issues they face – issues that will only grow as people spend more time in the digital world.

Young netizens need the knowledge to navigate the Internet and social media safely.

Working with Students On their Level

Huawei's SmartBus is no ordinary bus. Instead, it’s an interactive, mobile digital classroom that teaches young people about the potential dangers of the Internet through interactive lessons and games.

The SmartBus helps children aged 11 to 15 identify cyberbullying and instructs them how to report it. It teaches them that by using websites and social media, they can unknowingly share personal information online that can be seen by other people. And with real-world examples, they learn about fake news and the need to fact-check rather than believe everything they see, even if the source looks trustworthy.

Teaching Netiquette to Europe's Youth

Launched in Belgium on October 4, 2019 in the Flemish town of Sint-Truiden, Huawei's SmartBus visited 126 different schools in Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. As of the end of 2020, the two buses had already visited 126 schools and reached more than 25,000 children.

Extensive research has been carried out to understand what children are doing online and to ensure that SmartBus addresses their needs. This has helped us to define new educational approaches, which we intend to further develop during and after the tour. Janice Richardson,

Steering Students in the Right Direction

Protecting young people online starts with empowering them with knowledge. As the SmartBus initiative expands throughout Europe and further afield, Huawei is working with schools and governments to help equip a new generation of netizens with the knowledge they need to stay safe online.
