AI DigiSchool: Reaching China’s Rural Schools with AI Training

AI DigiSchool is bringing practical AI skills to teachers and students, helping to bridge the digital divide in China’s remote and rural areas

The rural–urban education divide remains a pressing issue globally, one that creates performance gaps and uneven student outcomes.

Rural students often face larger class sizes, fewer qualified teachers, and lower funding compared to their urban peers. Qualified teachers tend to cluster in cities, while rural schools struggle to recruit and retain talent. At the same time, rural schools frequently lack modern facilities, digital tools, and extracurricular programs. On a national scale, this contributes to uneven regional economic development and opportunities for young people.

AI should not become a new threshold that widens the gap; instead, it should serve as a new bridge to narrow the digital divide. That was the thinking behind the TECH4ALL AI DigiSchool. Implemented by project partner WaytoAGI, a collaborative knowledge hub and China’s largest AI community, the project sought to bring cutting-edge AI technologies to remote mountainous areas.

Launched in 2025 in Yunnan Province, the initiative aimed to transform rural teachers and students from AI spectators, for whom AI is something other people do, to creators and active participants who have mastered and can utilize AI tools. Equipped with cutting-edge hardware such as robotic dogs, drones, tablets, and AI glasses, the team of WaytoAGI experts bring advanced tools directly to classrooms and playgrounds.

Practical and hands on

Practical and hands on

The team comprises experts in different disciplines, including scientists, project managers, and artists. Course materials consist of AI co-created courseware, customized materials, and teaching research tools framed around a replicable execution process. The teaching style abandons the traditional lecture-style approach in favor of a cognition-practice-output model that prioritizes hands-on experience and practical integration into classroom settings. Rather than simply showing how AI and AI-powered hardware works through equipment demos, the training is designed to be structured, interactive, and educationally purposeful.

What we are doing is not AI popularization, nor is it a tech show. We are helping teachers and children complete a full learning journey: First, listen and see; then feel; and finally, truly create.Yang Yilian,

Course deliverables include prompt engineering, AI image creation and optimization, robotics, vibe coding, and AI for innovation. At the student workshop, for example, children are encouraged to develop prompts and design posters, images, and videos to represent the stories of their hometown, its landscapes, as well as their own futures and whatever else they can imagine.

Rural reality

To address the connectivity challenges many rural schools face, such as insufficient network bandwidth or a lack of a reliable Internet connection, the team developed AI teaching tools that are usable offline. These include an AI instant camera that children can use to produce and alter images, with processing taking place on the client side. A clear favorite among children is of course the robot dog. This lively companion can move, sense its surroundings, and interact. By making advanced technology approachable, the abstract idea of artificial intelligence is transformed into a hands-on lesson they can truly see and feel.

For teachers, training is not just about demystifying AI. It focuses on improving teaching outcomes through capabilities such as developing AI-assisted courseware and lesson plans and using teaching and research management tools, class management tools, and customized materials for tasks like restoring images and subject-specific illustrations.

From November 2025 to the end of December, the team travelled 1,000 km across Yunnan, reaching 150 teachers and 2,000 students across the province in the first edition of the project. The, second outing, beginning in March 2026, took the team to six cities in Gansu in partnership with TECH4ALL and the Western Sunshine Public Welfare Foundation, reaching 1,100 teachers and students.

For the children and teachers, the course often represents their first real opportunity to use AI. By empowering teachers to bring AI into lesson planning and teaching, and by allowing children to use AI as a new language for expressing themselves and imagining their futures, AI usage moves from novel experience to creative capability. Once the training is over, these capabilities remain.
