Symposium

Tech for a Better Planet

Time: 10:00 - 12:40, Aug 05, 2021(GMT+8)

Introduction

A look at ways to address the biodiversity crisis in the Asia-Pacific.

Points of View

Technology will play a critical role in creating a sustainable and inclusive planet for future generations – I look forward to the partnerships and cutting-edge technologies that will make this happen. ——Jay Chen, Vice President of Huawei Asia Pacific Region

Partnerships and participation with the private sector, is important with Government. —— NILO B. TAMORIA, CESO III, Regional Director, DENR-4A

Now more than ever, we need to re-assess our relationship with nature and move faster towards nature-positive and low-carbon growth models. —— Kevin Zhang, CMO, ICT Infrastructure, Huawei

Let us harness converging technologies – in the physical, digital, and biological worlds – to create a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable future. ——Dr. Dindo Campilan, Regional Director for Asia, IUCN

A 2019 survey of over 11,000 global CEOs undertaken by Accenture and the UN Global Compact found that, while 71% of CEOs understand that business has a critical role in contributing to the SDGs, only 21% believe that their organizations are currently fulfilling this role. For the SDGs to be realized it will be important to close this gap and help companies to fulfill their potential to drive SDG impact on the road to 2030. ——Khun Siriporn Sriaram, Thailand Business and Bio-Diversity Network Alliance Manager, IUCN Thailand

ITU Area Representive for Southeast Asia and other Member States in Asia and the Pacific The ITU's Plenipotentiary Conference has set a target to increase the global e-waste recycling rate to 30% by 2023. ——Dr. Syed Ismail Shah, ITU Area Representive for Southeast Asia and other Member States in Asia and the Pacific

Conservation is not a one-year, five-year, or ten-year goal. It's ultimately a century-long goal. —— Topher White, Founder, Rainforest Connection

In 2019, only 17.4% of the total e-waste that was generated was documented as properly collected and recycled worldwide. ——Yondeen Sherpa, E-waste Policy and Technology Consultant, Environment & Emergency Telecommunications Division, ITU

Digital inclusion is the heart of everything we do. We are working collaboratively with partners and the public sector in reducing inequalities. Digital inclusion initiatives across the globe are unlocking the power of connectivity, so that people, industry, and society can thrive. —— Matt Wilson, Insights Director, ClimateTech, GSMA

TECH4ALL is a digital inclusion initiative that brings together global partners, such as UNESCO, IUCN, ITU, GSMA, governments, and NGOs, to improve education, health, development, and environment. —— David Lu Qilin, President, Strategy Marketing Dept, Huawei Asia Pacific Region

We can use technology and connectivity to monitor protected areas such as mangroves, peatlands, or rainforests. The bioacoustics or the sounds from the forest can be captured as data using intelligent solutions, transmitted using Smart’s network to the cloud. This data can be accessed by the forest rangers and local law enforcement, as well as the local communities to detect illegal logging and poaching activities. ——Ms. Melissa Vergel De Dios, First Vice President and Head of Sustainability PLDT

Through Digital Technology we can collect information such as stills, videos and sounds from camera traps and sound recorders. These tools allow recording of presence, movement and behavior information in protected areas to inform the conservation of species and their habitats. ——Sheila G Vergara, Director, Biodiversity Information Management, ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity
