When the USD2 trillion communication industry grows into a global digital economy worth up to USD70 trillion, one may choose to be the leaping frog instead of the boiling one, but this alone will not guarantee survival. So, how can telcos prosper in this huge, complex, and fast moving ecosystem? Martin Creaner, President of the TM Forum, gives some hints.
“A lot of people talk about the open digital economy and everyone realizes that a whole suite of services are emerging that telcos or CSPs want to offer but don’t offer at the moment, such as health care, M2M, finance & payment, and home environment management. But fundamentally, the open digital economy is about personalization – personalization of services down to the individual user.
I talk about the crown jewels of telco. The first one obviously is the network. Everybody needs connectivity and they need more connectivity. I also believe that their billing relationship with their customers, not the billing system per say, is a crown jewel. Those two stand out for me right now. I think the amount of data that is crossing their network is the third core asset which is, I won’t say ignored, but telcos really should try to learn how to use it through data analytics.”
