Security Advisory - Memory Leak Vulnerability in Several Huawei Products

  • SA No:huawei-sa-20160615-01-standby
  • Initial Release Date: 2016-06-15
  • Last Release Date: 2016-06-15

There is a vulnerability in several Huawei devices: USG series, NGFW module, IPS module, NIP series and AntiDDoS8000.

A memory leak vulnerability exists in these products. In hot standby networking where two devices are not directly connected, an attacker can craft a malformed packet, which exhausts the device's memory resources and causes device reboot. (Vulnerability ID: HWPSIRT-2016-04004)

Huawei has released software updates to fix these vulnerabilities. This advisory is available at the following link:

By exploiting this vulnerability, an attacker can exhaust the device's memory resources and cause device reboot.

The vulnerability classification has been performed by using the CVSSv2 scoring system (http://www.first.org/cvss/).

Base Score: 5.4 (AV:N/AC:H/Au:N/C:N/I:N/A:C)

Temporal Score: 4.5 (E:F/RL:O/RC:C)

Prerequisite:
1. The attacker gains access to the device network.
2. Two devices are not directly connected in hot standby networking.

Attacking procedure:
In hot standby networking where two devices are not directly connected, an attacker can craft a malformed packet. Massive malformed packets will exhaust the device's memory resources and causes device reboot.
