Huawei ranked 25th overall in Canada for Corporate R&D Spenders

2017.11.13

Monday, November 13, 2017 (Toronto, ON) – Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider and one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers was ranked 25th among Canada's Top 100 Corporate R&D Spenders, according to RE$EARCH Infosource Inc. For the past six years, Huawei has consistently moved up in the rankings and jumped from the 44th to 25th spot this year – including having the second largest year-over-year spend across all industries.

“Research and development is a priority for Huawei both globally and here in Canada,” said Steve Lu, President, Huawei Canada. “Since launching in Canada, we have steadily increased our R&D contributions. This year, working alongside great Canadian talent and partners, we have spent more than $127 million to bring innovative solutions to the global market. We are not only committed to continuing this investment, but excited to see what we can accomplish.”

Huawei first opened the Huawei Canada Research Centre in Ottawa in 2009. Over the past eight years, the Huawei CRC has expanded operations to include facilities in Waterloo and Markham. With over 425 researchers and engineers now on staff, Huawei’s Canada Research Centre team has filed more than 1,200 patents since 2011.

In partnership with Canada’s telecom operators, and a number of major Universities across the country, Huawei is helping to drive Canada’s global leadership in 5G advanced communications research – the transformational technology that will enable future developments like automated vehicles and the internet of things.

“5G communications will revolutionize the way we do business and the way we live our lives,” added Lu. “Our ongoing investment and collaborative partnerships with Canadian carriers and universities is helping to ensure that Canada will be in position to fully benefit and leverage this transformative technology. We know that when 5G is ready, Canada will be ready.”

Globally, Huawei remains committed to investing in its information computer technology (ICT) Strategy to build a better connected world. Approximately 80,000 employees, or almost half, of Huawei’s global workforce are engaged in R&D. In 2016, R&D accounted for 14.6% of the company’s total revenue.
