Huawei Announces London OpenLab to Further Joint Innovation with Customers and Partners

[London, June 26, 2017] At its 2017 annual Summer Reception, held at Banqueting House, Whitehall, Huawei will announce it will be develop and open a London OpenLab focused on developing solutions and technologies through strengthened joint innovation with its customers and partners in the next two years.

The London facility is part of Huawei’s $200 million Global OpenLab Program, which plans to open 15 new facilities across the world in the next three years. The new London-based OpenLab will enable Huawei to work with various industry partners to create customer-centric and innovative solutions that enable digital transformation, while promoting industry ecosystem development. 

Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Karen Bradley said: “The UK is open for business and Huawei’s continued investment in the UK is another vote of confidence in our thriving digital economy which is worth more than £118 billion a year. As we set out in the Queen’s Speech and our recent Digital Strategy, we are determined to make the UK the best place to start and run a digital business. Huawei's decision to bring its innovative Global OpenLab Program to London will play an important part in helping us achieve our aim.”

Lord Browne of Madingley, Chairman of Huawei UK’s Board said: “Digital transformation is driving change in all societies, economies and sectors.  Huawei believes its benefits can be maximised and its challenges met with continuous innovation. The London OpenLab will help drive this innovation. Through it, we will help our local partners integrate their capabilities into our global business and promote these capabilities all over the world, in that way making local ICT industries more competitive.” 

Huawei has five existing OpenLabs in five cities including Suzhou, Dubai, Mexico City, Singapore, and Munich. These OpenLabs are facilitating joint innovation and solution launches with more than 400 partners across the Smart Cities, finance, transportation, energy, manufacturing and media sectors. By the end of 2019, Huawei plans to increase this number to 20. 

The Global OpenLab Program is aligned with Huawei Enterprise Business Group’s ‘Platform + Ecosystem’ strategy. This strategy centres on collaborating with partners and customers to develop innovative, differentiated and leading industry-specific solutions that enable open, flexible, and secure platforms to drive enterprise digital transformation.
