Malaysia's Minister of Education Attends Huawei Seeds For The Future 2019 Graduation Ceremony

[Shenzhen, July 12, 2019] – Today the Minister of Education of Malaysia, YB Dr. Maszlee Malik attended the closing ceremony of Huawei’s Seeds for the Future at its headquarters in Shenzhen in which ten students from nine local universities underwent Huawei’s annual flagship exchange programme.  

Since 2014, Huawei Malaysia has worked closely with the Ministry of Education to provide over 80 Malaysian ICT undergraduates the opportunity to undergo a two-week study trip in China. During this time, participants explored Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen and research facilities in Beijing. They also received hands-on ICT training to provide them the feel and taste of working for a top multinational company, and how modern technologies such as 5G, the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence are developed and made useful for societies across the world. Furthermore, the students had the privilege to immerse themselves in Chinese culture and language, and visit historic landmarks such as the Great Wall and Forbidden City.

According to one of the selected participants, Tan Mei Jun from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, “When we visited Huawei’s headquarters, I was really inspired and motivated by Huawei’s vision in order to build a fully connected, intelligent world. Out of the two-week study trip, the best part is having to attend classes in Huawei University, which was such a rare opportunity.” 

Minister of Education, Dr. Maszlee Malik said, “Solutions that are designed to address the society’s challenges must incorporate technology. The private sector recognises this and is leading the way in adopting technology

 to lead innovation and providing better services to their consumers, which I understand is in the Huawei DNA. Our ministry is currently pursuing multiple initiatives to future-proof our graduates by promoting digital literacy, innovation and technological breakthroughs in them. We have to jointly build an ecosystem where our talents can develop these skills.”

“However, in our pursuit of advancing technologically and preparing our students for the future, we must not forget we instil values in the heart and minds, which makes us human. In Malaysia, we have taken steps to spread the fundamental values of love, happiness and mutual respect amongst our students. Today, I hope that this programme would promote trust, goodwill and lifelong friendships among all of you.”

Inspired by the programme, the participants have plans to come home and contribute to the ICT development in Malaysia. Ahmad Danial Irfan bin Husain who is studying Bachelor's in Computer Science from University Tenaga Nasional said, “My ambition is to become a successful software engineer. I aspire not just to lead a life of work, but to contribute and shape Malaysia’s path to become a technologically advanced country.”

Also present at the closing ceremony, Michael Yuan, CEO of Huawei Malaysia said, “We thank the Malaysian Government for their continuous support for Huawei and for trusting us with the opportunity to develop the ICT industry in Malaysia. In order to create a flourishing ICT ecosystem, we need to start first with young, fresh minds. Huawei has made continuous investments in talent education and enablement in addition to constant technology and application innovation. We aim to cultivate and spread qualified talents by building the ICT talent ecosystem with talent development programmes like Seeds for the Future, our partnerships for Huawei ICT academies, and Huawei Authorized Learning Partners (HALPs) which are on a global level. I trust today’s group of students will bring back home an abundance of valuable experiences and knowledge, and a positive perception of the outside world which will support Malaysia’s nation-building efforts.” 

Huawei Seeds for the Future is a global initiative which has been operating with great success since 2008 involving over 4,700 students from 108 countries worldwide. Apart from Malaysia, this year’s programme also hosts students from Brunei, Ireland and New Zealand.
