Huawei Malaysia, OpenRe partner on Battery Energy Storage Solutions to meet peak power demands in Malaysia
OpenRE and Huawei Malaysia MoU signing ceremony at IGEM 2025 (L-R): OpenRE General Manager (Business Development) Dr Teoh Boon Yew and Chief Technology Officer Dr Chong Lee Wai; MGTC Board Members YBhg Dato’ Leong Kin Mun and YBrs Tuan Haji Ismail bin Mohd Amin; Huawei Malaysia Vice President of Digital Power Business Chong Chern Peng and Director of Smart PV and ESS Zhang Xiaoming.KUALA LUMPUR, 21 October 2025 – Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Huawei Malaysia) and Open Re Sdn Bhd (OpenRE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a framework for cooperation and partnership in addressing the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) solutions aimed at supporting the nation’s rapidly growing energy demand in its renewable energy (RE) journey. The BESS solutions are aimed at helping businesses and end users optimise energy consumption and manage peak power demands.
The focus of the partnership is to deliver BESS solutions for managing Maximum Demand (MD) scenarios — periods when a facility’s power usage peaks and electricity charges are highest. By building a sustainable BESS ecosystem that is driven by AI, commercial and industrial consumers improve energy efficiency and reduce operational costs while contributing to national goals for decarbonisation and sustainable growth.
“This collaboration with Huawei marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s journey toward intelligent energy management. By combining Huawei’s world-class BESS hardware with OpenRE’s proprietary AI Energy Demand Response (AIE-DR), we are enabling industries to unlock higher energy efficiency, manage peak demand more intelligently, and move closer to carbon-neutral operations. Together, we are building a sustainable ecosystem that empowers local industries to thrive in the clean energy transition,” said Dr. Lin Horng Sheng, Chief Executive Officer of OpenRE.
“Malaysia’s energy transition will only succeed through intelligent integration between digital technologies and clean power systems. Together with OpenRE, we aim to strengthen Malaysia’s energy-storage value chain so that more industries can access reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy management solutions,” said Chong Chern Peng, Vice President of Huawei Malaysia, Digital Power Business.
As the technology enabler, Huawei Malaysia will contribute its global expertise and innovation leadership through product manufacturing, technical sharing and market supply of its globally renowned advanced Smart PV and BESS technologies. OpenRE will complement this with its Energy Management System (EMS) AI software, alongside technical and business support for end-users.
Under the MoU, both parties will work together on building a sustainable ecosystem that captures emerging market opportunities and delivers comprehensive end-to-end energy management solutions across key industrial sectors.
Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) has identified energy storage as a key enabler of the country’s carbon-neutral target by 2050. The Huawei Malaysia-OpenRE partnership aligns with this vision by empowering industries with BESS solutions to enhance grid flexibility, reliability and renewable-energy integration to manage power more intelligently and sustainably.
The MoU signing took place at the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2025, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from October 15 to 17, and was signed by Dr. Teoh Boon Yew, General Manager (Business Development) of OpenRE and Chong Chern Peng, Vice President of Huawei Malaysia, Digital Power Business. The ceremony was witnessed by YBhg. Dato’ Leong Kin Mun, Malaysian Green Tech & Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) Board Member; YBrs. Tuan Haji Ismail bin Mohd Amin, MGTC Board Member; Dr. Chong Lee Wai, Chief Technology Officer of OpenRE; and Zhang Xiaoming, Director of Smart PV and ESS, Digital Power Business, Huawei Malaysia.
