Huawei brings Smart Campus and Talent Development Initiatives to Sabah
Kuala Lumpur, November 9, 2017 – Huawei Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today with the aim to establish the development of a Smart Campus initiative and industry driven programs. The exchange ceremony took place at Huawei’s Asia Pacific Innovation Day in Kuala Lumpur and was attended by UMS Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr. D. Kamarudin D. Mudin and Huawei Malaysia’s Chief Executive Officer, Abraham Liu and witnessed by YB Dato’ Seri Ahmad Zahid bin Hamidi, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan, Second International Trade and Industry Minister, and Mr Guo Ping, Deputy Chairman of the Board, Rotating CEO, Huawei.
The university has appointed Huawei as a technical and business advisor for Smart Campus strategies and best ICT practices. In this role, Huawei will design initiatives and training programmes to share its vast knowledge and expertise on the latest ICT industry trends to the local university’s personnel and students. In addition, Huawei will assist in tailoring a career-based development program for the students to equip them with the necessary skills to be able to compete in an emerging digital economy. The partnership will add momentum in creating a knowledge-driven workforce by shaping students into industry-ready graduates and professional ICT talents for the country.
Prof. Datuk Dr. D. Kamarudin D. Mudin shared his remarks after the exchange, “Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Huawei share a commitment to developing the next generation of ICT experts. It is important to us to deliver high-quality education to our students to ensure they are given the best digital tools and an interactive learning environment to prepare for the future. We thank partners such as Huawei who recognise the importance of education and that if we want change, we need to start with our youth first.”
Huawei will also work with UMS in planning and developing a strong ICT infrastructure and subsequently smart application platforms, where students will enjoy faster broadband and wider wireless coverage throughout the campus and encourage students to leverage on IoT technology as learning aides.
According to Abraham Liu, CEO of Huawei Malaysia shared, “Huawei has been a huge supporter of education and a long-time driver of industry-academia collaboration across the world. Such initiatives will help students understand the practical application of what they learn in university and make them confident in putting these skills to good use in the real-world. As strategic partner to Malaysia’s digital transformation, we need to work together to develop the ICT industry on all fronts to ensure the nation achieves its intended goals and objectives.”
Through extensive collaboration between industry, academia, government and research, Huawei has been committed to support Malaysia’s digital infrastructure and nation building initiatives for the past 16 years.
