2023.03.16

Safaricom, a Kenyan telecommunications company, has partnered with Huawei to launch three 5G experience centers in Nairobi. The centers will be located in Safaricom’s Village Market, The Hub and Buruburu Shops and will showcase the benefits of 5G connectivity, including superfast speeds and cutting-edge devices. Customers will be able to experience virtual reality gaming zones, smart home and enterprise capabilities and speed-testing booths.

Safaricom launched its 5G network in October 2022, the first in the region. Since then, the company has commissioned over 200 5G sites across 11 counties, including Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu. Customers in 5G zones can enjoy the network through 5G Wi-Fi, while over 300,000 Safaricom customers already using 5G smartphones can access the 5G network and enjoy superfast speeds of up to 2Gbps, with typical speeds of 400Mbps to 700Mbps.

Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom PLC, expressed his excitement about the launch of the experience centers, saying that they will allow Kenyans to explore the possibilities of 5G firsthand. Sheng Kaifu, Deputy CEO of Huawei Kenya, praised the collaboration and emphasized the transformative impact of 5G in connecting homes and small businesses to drive economic growth and social development.

Safaricom has consistently invested in its network over the years, with its 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks covering over 99% of Kenya’s population. Its fiber network has also passed more than 450,000 homes and businesses, demonstrating the company’s commitment to providing reliable and accessible telecommunications services to the Kenyan people.
