Huawei Canada recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Corporate R&D spenders for 2016

2016.11.17

Markham, ON – November 17, 2016:  Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider and one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers, announced today that it has once again been named to RE$EARCH Infosource Inc.’s Top 100 Corporate R&D Spenders, moving from up from last year’s 44th spot to the 29th spot this year. This ranking reflects Huawei’s continued investment in Canada in 2016, bolstered by a $500 million commitment over the next five years to expand its R&D development efforts in the Province of Ontario and investments of over $8 million in Canadian universities.

“Our R&D investments efforts here in Canada are substantial and measurable, reflecting our commitment to becoming an important part of Canada’s ICT ecosystem,” said Huawei Canada President Sean Yang. “Canada is a very important innovation hub for Huawei and is home to some of the best ICT minds in the world. We look forward to investing further and working with Canadian talent to design innovative solutions to take to the global market.”

Huawei first established a research facility in Ottawa in 2009 and over the past seven years the Huawei Canada Research Centre has expanded operations to include facilities in Waterloo and Markham. As a result of the work of over 400 researchers and engineers, Huawei’s Canada Research Centre team has filed more than 1,100 patents since 2011. The Canada Research Centre is also leading Huawei’s global 5G advanced communications research – the transformational technology that will enable future developments like automated vehicles and the internet of things.

In 2016 Huawei Canada also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting and developing strategic local partnerships, investing over $8 million with Canadian universities across the country in 2016. This includes formal Strategic Research Collaboration Agreements with the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo, with Huawei committing $3 million in funding to each institution. Further research partnerships with Canadian universities will be announced in the months ahead.

Additionally, Huawei’s Seeds for the Future Program – which provides Canadian engineering students an opportunity to participate in a work/study program at Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China – will continue to be a key component of Huawei’s commitment to develop the next generation of Canada’s telecommunications leaders in the years to come.
