Huawei Canada’s 'Seeds for the Future' students chosen to embark on trip to China

2015.05.08

Education program will bring 18 engineering students from seven Canadian universities

on a work and cultural trip as investment in the future of ICT

Markham, ON, 2015 – Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, formally announced and welcomed the third-year engineering students selected to participate in its ‘Seeds for the Future’ program. On Saturday, May 9th, the 18 Canadian students will depart from Canada to participate in a two-week professional and cultural trip to China.

The ‘Seeds of the Future’ program aims to help develop ICT talent in Canada, promote a greater understanding of the telecommunications sector and encourage participation in the international ICT community.

“The response from our university partners and students was overwhelming, and all 18 ‘Seeds for the Future’ participants promise to be key players in the future of Canada’s ICT sector,” says Sean Yang, President of Huawei Canada. “It is our hope this international experience will expose them to a global, cross-cultural business environment and help prepare these students for a bright future in technology.”

The trip itinerary includes a week of cultural training and visits to prominent historical sites in Beijing, including an introductory course at the Beijing Language and Cultural University and a trip to the Great Wall of China. A one-week placement at Huawei headquarters in Shenzhen will follow, where students will receive first-hand learning opportunities with Huawei engineers and business leaders, visit Huawei’s laboratories and see live demonstrations of advanced communications technologies.

‘Seeds for the Future’ is an important element in Huawei’s work with Canadian universities. To date, Huawei has invested over $3 million in advanced communications research projects with universities across Canada. Since 2010, the company’s Canada Research Centre in Ottawa has played a central role in establishing Huawei as one of the global leaders in transformative 5G technology and innovative research supported by Canadian universities.

“This is a unique opportunity for Canadian engineering students to gain valuable international experience with a global leading ICT company,” says Brian Daku, Head, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. “I commend Huawei for taking on a leadership role in helping Canada’s engineering talent prepare for their future careers.”
