NSW Ambulance patients benefit from leading technology

AUSTRALIA, June 27, 2012 – NSW Ambulance emergency patients and clients are reaping the benefits of world leading communications technology deployed by Huawei.

Huawei won a tender to rebuild the NSW Ambulance corporate communications technology system the Wide Area Network (WAN) to support a multi-carrier, low cost, scalable and service rich network between ambulance stations, regional offices, workshops, control centres, ambulance headquarters and NSW Health.

The Deputy Premier of New South Wales (NSW), Mr Andrew Stoner MP, visited the Shenzhen headquarters of Huawei and highlighted the work Huawei had been doing with NSW Ambulance.

“Earlier this year the ambulance service was equipped with Huawei‟s ARG3 communications network which has resulted in an immediate improvement, with zero-network downtime for the first time in more than 10 years,” he said.

Huawei Director of Corporate and Public Affairs, Jeremy Mitchell today announced the results of the new system and said seven million people relied on NSW Ambulance to deliver high quality emergency clinical care and health related transport services.

“When one or two minutes can make the difference between life and death, it’s critical communications systems are fast and reliable,” Mr Mitchell said.

“Huawei‟s ARG3 communication network solution has delivered greater network performance, greater reliability, more flexibility and importantly better support to Paramedics and patients in emergency situations.”

The new network supports the increasing number of devices and applications used by Paramedics including remote medical assessment, emergency video conferencing facilities and routine corporate and training applications. Over 260 NSW Ambulance sites now linked using Huawei routers for the WAN, a very fast fixed-line connection and a backup 3G connection if the fixed line fails. Network services include email, file sharing, intranet, document management and online learning applications.

Mr Mitchell said it was the first implementation of “Bi-Directional Forward Detection‟ (BFD) in an Australian enterprise.

“BFD allows the network to automatically switch to a backup should the network fail – detecting and correcting network failures within 500 milliseconds,” Mr Mitchell said.
