Huawei’s next-generation fibre equipment powered by Australian expertise

Shanghai, China, July 12, 2010: NSW Premier Kristina Keneally has welcomed a new contract signed by Huawei Australia and Finisar which will create 95 jobs in New South Wales. Announced at Huawei’s Shanghai headquarters to mark the beginning of NSW week at Shanghai Expo, the contract will see Finisar increase production of a key component used in Huawei’s world-leading fibre network solutions.

The contract builds on an existing agreement in which Finisar provides Huawei with the Dynamic Wavelength Processor (DWP), a Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) which is an intelligent optical processing module that can switch individual optical channels arbitrarily between up to 10 optical fibre ports in transmission systems. The DWP is a key enabler within Huawei’s world-leading fibre network solutions as it helps respond to increasing bandwidth demands and changes to the service mix, e.g. between voice, data, video, mobile wireless or storage applications. Each DWP unit - the size of a tissue box - has to be hand-made and takes up to nine days to complete. The DWP units are wholly Australian designed and manufactured.

“It’s great news for both companies – Huawei gets a quality Australian-made, Australian designed product, while Finisar has a commitment that allows it to increase production by 40 per cent,” said Ms. Keneally at the signing of the contract. “The contract will lead to the creation of a further 20 new high-tech jobs, in addition to the 75 jobs created in the last 12 months by the first contract between Finisar and Huawei.”

During her visit to Huawei’s Shanghai facilities, the NSW Premier met with Huawei CEO Mr. Ren Zhengfei to discuss Huawei’s growing presence in NSW. Since 2004 Huawei has grown from just 20 staff to more than 200, with Huawei’s Australian headquarters based in Sydney. On a tour of Huawei’s showroom Ms Keneally experienced a live demonstration of Huawei’s Next-Generation broadband solutions, including streaming High-Definition television and 3D gaming over LTE (Long-Term Evolution) mobile broadband.

“With Australia playing such an important role in Huawei’s global operations, it’s great to see an Australian-made component going into our world-leading fibre solutions,” said Huawei Australia CEO Mr Guo Fulin. “As Huawei continues to grow in Australia, we’re pleased to see Finisar growing as well thanks to this win-win MoU.”

Sydney-based Finisar has grown from 125 employees last year to an expected 300 staff by Christmas 2010. As a result of this contract, Huawei and Finisar will be contributing to the growth of Australia as an R&D hub and centre for excellence in the development of fibre networking equipment.
