Huawei Hosts Graduate Recruitment Event at King’s College London

2017.07.04
[London, UK, 04 July 2017] Huawei, a leading global ICT solutions provider, is today hosting a graduate recruitment event at Kings College London as part of it ‘STEM skills to STEM careers’ scheme in the UK to attract talent to its Huawei UK Graduate Programme.

Today’s event will host more than 100 STEM undergraduates and graduates attending from ten leading UK Universities. Huawei has promoted the event, which is being held at the Great Hall, part of the King's College Strand campus in central London, to a targeted group of STEM undergraduates.

Huawei UK Graduate Programme
The Huawei UK Graduate Programme, now in its third year, will see 12 UK graduates recruited to take up roles in the business. This follows on from the successful start of the programme, which in the first two years employed 19 STEM graduates. The new recruits will be offered a programme of training, role rotation and project responsibilities, which is part of a five year plan for their roles at Huawei. The 12 graduates from 2016’s intake included two individuals who were part of Huawei’s “Seeds for the Future Programme” in 2015 – a testament to the company’s objective to move from ‘STEM Skills to STEM Careers’.

Professor Michael Luck, Executive Dean, Natural & Mathematical Sciences, King’s College London, said: “We are very pleased to be supporting the Huawei Graduate recruitment event. As a university with world leading STEM departments, we know how critical it is to prepare our students for their next step and it’s events like this one that help give undergraduates the understanding they need as they embark on their careers. We believe cooperation between universities and businesses will be even more important in the future. By working together closely we can generate better outcomes for all parties, and in particular for our students.”

Gordon Luo, CEO, Huawei UK, said: “Digital transformation is driving change across all societies, economies and sectors globally. As a global leader in ICT Huawei understands that ensuring we have the necessary skills and talent pool to address this transformation is critical. That is why Huawei launched the UK graduate programme and also our ‘Seeds for the Future’ programme – which is in its seventh year. If you’re studying a STEM subject at University, we want to encourage you to pursue a STEM career.”

‘Seeds for the Future’
Huawei’s flagship corporate responsibility programme ‘Seeds for the Future’ seeks to develop ICT talent, enhance knowledge transfers and improve the skills and life chances of talented STEM undergraduates globally. The programme includes a visit to Huawei’s Shenzhen campus to learn about the company’s international business culture and values, and to receive ICT training from some of the best professionals in the industry. Over the past seven years, 134 students from universities across the UK have taken part in ‘Seeds for the Future’, with 50 more students taking part in 2017. By 2020 the Huawei Seeds for the Future’ programme will have taken another 200 UK undergraduates to China, contributing to the British Council Generation UK - China initiative.

The hashtag for the event is #HuaweiTalent and @HuaweiUK will be live tweeting from the event.

About Generation UK - China

Generation UK is a British Council campaign that supports and encourages the outward mobility of British students.  The campaign aims to develop a new generation of globally mobile, culturally agile young people who can succeed and compete in an increasingly borderless marketplace. There are currently specific programmes in China and India.

Generation UK - China, launched in June 2013, aims to grow the number of UK students who have participated in study or internship programmes in China to 80,000 by 2020. To achieve this goal, the campaign is providing a growing number of opportunities for young British students to experience, understand and engage with China and raising students’ awareness of the benefits of doing so.

The campaign offers funded internships and scholarships for academic study for UK students to gain international experience in China and is currently supported by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Directorate of Advanced Learning and Science, Scottish Government, the Department for Economy, Northern Ireland and the Welsh Government. .
