Huawei ICT Competition Malaysia 2024-2025 awards showcase nation’s rising digital talent
PUTRAJAYA, 12th DECEMBER 2024 – Digital talent is the backbone of digital transformation and Malaysia received a shot in the arm in this area during the Huawei ICT Competition Malaysia 2024–2025 awards ceremony. Among the highlights from the event were 16 students and instructors being crowned grand prize winners in the competition’s Cloud, Network, Computing, and Innovation competition tracks.
These remarkable achievements were drawn from a competitive pool of over 1,200 participants representing 40 public and private universities nationwide. The awards ceremony was co-organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Huawei Malaysia),
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) clinched the grand prize for the Innovation Track under instructor Chong Yung Wey and students Lim Miin Ning, Naomi Tham Kah Mun and Bok Wei Hong.
USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed said, “USM's victory at the national level of the Huawei ICT Competition's Innovation Track demonstrates our continued excellence in nurturing innovative minds, enhancing our graduates' employability and industry readiness, while reinforcing our position as a leading institution in technological advancement.”
Universiti Malaya (UM), represented by instructor Dr Rafidah Binti Md Noor and students Chew Ying Ying, Lee Xim Er, and Cheu Zi Yuan emerged as grand prize winners in the Cloud Track. Reflecting on the win, Dr Rafidah said, “This grand prize is not just a trophy. It is a symbol of what we can achieve together and the endless possibilities of ICT. Thank you, Huawei ICT Academy Malaysia, for this amazing opportunity!"

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), with instructor Ahmad Alauddin Ariffin and students Nurul Natasha Nabilah Binti Mohd Dino, Nur A'in A'liya Binti Ahmad Alauddin, and Anis Nadira Noor Maisam, won the grand prize in the Network Track.
"This achievement means even more because it’s my second time in the competition, and I finally made it further this year. I am so thankful for the support and guidance from my instructors, who were always there to help us. I feel excited and ready to give my best as we prepare for the Regional Stage ahead," shared UPM’s Nurul Natasha Nabilah Mohd Dino.
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Kampar) secured the grand prize in the Computing Track, represented by instructor Dr Aun Yichiet and students Liew Zheng Xian, Ng Shi Qi, and Har Sze Hao.
Dr Aun expressed, “Winning the Computing Track in the Huawei ICT Competition is a moment of deep pride. It feels like serendipity—the right people, the right effort, and the right partnership with Huawei all coming together. It is always rewarding to see our students grow, thrive, and eventually create a meaningful impact for society. Huawei has built an incredible talent community and taught us that success is not always a straight line, but with grit and guidance, we can navigate our way toward our goals.”
Additionally, six educators received the Huawei Malaysia Most Dedicated Instructors 2024 awards, recognising their outstanding contributions to nurturing ICT talent. The honourees were Dr Lee Sui Ping from Xiamen University Malaysia, Dr Ng Kok Why and Dr Lee Fong Yee from Multimedia University, Dr Tan Soo Fun from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, as well as Dr Noorhayati Md Noor and Dr Azliza binti Mohd Ali from Universiti Teknologi MARA.
Six institutions were honoured as Huawei Malaysia Outstanding ICT Academies 2024, recognising their excellence in advancing ICT education. The recipients were Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Multimedia University, Universiti Malaya, Xiamen University Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi MARA, and INTI International College Penang.
All the grand prize winners will compete at the regional level in February next year.
In his speech at the awards ceremony, UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Hj Mansur, highlighted how Huawei's commitment to education aligns seamlessly with UMS's mission to cultivate skilled leaders and drive digital transformation.
The awards ceremony was officiated by Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, who represented Minister of Higher Education (MOHE) Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir. Also present were Higher Education Ministry Secretary General Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang and Higher Education Director General Datuk Professor Dr. Azlinda Azman.
There was also Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) exchange between the Ministry of Higher Education and Huawei Malaysia at the event. The collaboration will focus on the sharing of best practices in emerging technologies, real-world expertise, and cutting-edge resources, including state-of-the-art facilities.

Huawei Malaysia also hosted the Digital Talent Forum Day 2024 earlier in the day, organised in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah and MOHE. The forum convened over 100 instructors from 30 universities, alongside representatives from government, academia, and industry, to engage in discussions on ICT education in the digital economy, innovative teaching practices, and strategies for advancing digital transformation in education.
