Huawei Australia Announces Record Results and Appoints New CEO

2019.05.01
[Sydney, Australia, May 1 2019] Huawei Australia lodged its 2018 annual results with the Australia Securities and Investment Commission today. The company maintained strong business growth in 2018 recording sales revenues of $735 million, up 18% year-on-year.

Huawei Australia Chairman, John Lord said the results were the best recorded by the company in 15 years of operation in Australia.

“It’s fair to say we had a challenging year on the political front, but our Australian customers valued and trusted our world leading technology and purchased it in record numbers,” Mr Lord said.

“Huawei technology is cutting edge, safe and secure and that’s why we have become the largest supplier of mobile network infrastructure in Australia.

“These results make it very clear Huawei is the leading supplier of innovative telecommunications solutions and it’s a great shame Australian’s will miss out on our 5G technology,” he said.

“Countries that choose to work with Huawei will gain an advantage for the next wave of growth in the digital economy."

Mr Lord said Huawei remained focused on improving Australia’s current 4G networks, offering local businesses and governments a leading IT alternative and marketing our devices on an unprecedented level.

In summary:

  • The carrier business was up 20% (YoY), on the back of strong network investment from Optus and Vodafone
  • The Perth metro contract spurred a 19% (YoY) jump in enterprise business sales, and
  • Strong growth in high-end smartphones led to a 20% (YoY) growth in the consumer business.

Mr Lord thanked fellow board members, including The Hon John Brumby who retired from the board earlier this year.

“Since we established the Australian board in 2011, our revenue has increased from $229m in 2011 to $735m in 2018 - a cumulative annual growth rate of 18% per annum. Employee numbers have more than doubled from 300 to around 700,” Mr Lord said.

Mr Lord also thanked outgoing CEO George Huang for his tireless contribution and announced his replacement.

“George did a tremendous job in trying circumstances and can take a lot of credit for our best ever result,” Mr Lord said.
