Security Advisory - Two Vulnerabilities in Some Huawei CPE Devices

  • SA No:huawei-sa-20170920-01-cpe
  • Initial Release Date: Sep 20, 2017
  • Last Release Date: Sep 20, 2017

The outdoor unit of some Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) has a no authentication vulnerability on a certain port. After accessing the network between the indoor and outdoor units of the CPE, an attacker can deliver commands to the specific port of the outdoor unit and execute them without authentication. Successful exploit could allow the attacker to take control over the outdoor unit. (Vulnerability ID: HWPSIRT-2017-06244)
This vulnerability has been assigned a CVE ID: CVE-2017-8155.
The outdoor unit of some CPE has a no authentication vulnerability on the serial port. An attacker can access the serial port on the circuit board of the outdoor unit and log in to the CPE without authentication. Successful exploit could allow the attacker to take control over the outdoor unit. (Vulnerability ID: HWPSIRT-2017-06245)
This vulnerability has been assigned a CVE ID: CVE-2017-8156.
Huawei has released software updates to fix these vulnerabilities. This advisory is available at the following link:

Successful exploit could allow the attacker to take control over the outdoor unit.

The vulnerability classification has been performed by using the CVSSv3 scoring system (http://www.first.org/cvss/specification-document).

HWPSIRT-2017-06244:
Base Score: 8.8 (AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H)
Temporal Score: 8.2 (E:F/RL:O/RC:C)
HWPSIRT-2017-06245:
Base Score: 8.4 (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H)
Temporal Score: 7.8 (E:F/RL:O/RC:C)
HWPSIRT-2017-06244:
This vulnerability can be exploited only when the following conditions are present:
Between the outdoor unit and indoor unit, the attacker needs to insert a switch that provides the Power over Ethernet (PoE) function and access the switch using a PC.
Vulnerability details:
After accessing the network between the indoor and outdoor units of the CPE, the attacker can deliver commands to a certain port of the outdoor unit and execute them without authentication. Successful exploit could allow the attacker to take control over the CPE.
HWPSIRT-2017-06245:
This vulnerability can be exploited only when the following conditions are present:
The attacker needs to open the enclosure of the outdoor unit and find the serial port on the board.
Vulnerability details:
An attacker can access the serial port on the circuit board of the outdoor unit and log in to the CPE without authentication. Successful exploit could allow the attacker to take control over the CPE.
